When glazing is the major architectural feature of your modern home how much thought goes into exactly what glass is being used, or just whatever the manufacturer "standard" is? "Clear", Starphire, Grey, Optigrey, Optiblue, Acuity SolarBan 60, 70, 90, 100, ClimaGuard, SunGuard, SN62/27, LoE 366, so many options. Glass performance and appearance varies greatly. Modern energy efficient coatings on clear glass may appear a little "green" from the outside depending on the lighting and many clients want to avoid it. Everything is about priorities and it can get technical VLT - Visible Light Transmittance: How much daylight inside the home, clarity of the views. Grey Low E may drop visible light to only 30% day AND night. EXT/INT Reflectance: Low E coatings are like the silver backing on a mirror designed to reflect as much infrared heat as possible and it will increase the visible reflectance outside and inside. SHGC - Solar Heat Gain Coefficient: How much radiated heat is entering the home. Do you want to feel like you are baking in the sun? You want this as low as possible in summer (Northerners may want MORE in winter so that has to balance). U-Value: This is the insulating value between inside and outside air masses, more important if the temperature may differ by more than 20-30 degrees. Typically a winter concern more than summer. Most window manufacturers have limited options but you can have a choice if you plan ahead during design development. Don't wait till the end of the process because it may take weeks to get custom samples and run varying energy performance models on your home.
