The East African Community (EAC) has unveiled plans to develop an extensive 6,220-kilometer Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network to connect all eight member states, marking a significant infrastructure initiative for the region. Currently, 1,120 kilometers of SGR are operational across Kenya and Tanzania, with an additional 1,100 kilometers under construction in Tanzania, and approximately 4,000 kilometers in the project preparation phase across other member states. EAC Deputy Secretary General Andrea Aguer Ariik emphasized that Kenya and Tanzania are leading the development of this regional railway network. The project aims to enhance regional integration and economic development through improved transportation infrastructure, with a focus on harmonizing standards for seamless cross-border operations. Notable developments include Tanzania's recent launch of SGR services between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, and Uganda's plans to establish SGR connections with neighboring countries including Kenya, Rwanda, DRC, and South Sudan. The initiative is expected to boost cross-border trade, which currently stands at just 15% for the region, with officials noting that other regions like Europe, Asia, and Latin America have achieved intra-regional trade levels exceeding 60%.
