So, what's new with the Grauer Summer Institutes this year? The addition of a gorgeous new academic building to Pomfret School's campus has given us space for MORE incredible Institutes. (I'm pretty sure that's why we built it....) This week, I'll highlight one of our new offerings each day -- starting with our partnership with R.E.A.L. Discussion! We'll be hosting three levels of training in this remarkable, research-informed method of teaching structured discussion skills. (Turns out, you're not just born knowing how to connect meaningfully with other people in an academic conversation.) Level 1 is for brand new R.E.A.L. teachers -- whether your whole school has adopted the method or not, you'll learn a ton about how to manage a class full of people talking to each other, and how to make sure they ALL learn something from the experience. Level 2 is for teachers already using R.E.A.L. who want to bring their practice to the next level, trade secrets with other practitioners, and cultivate a network of discussion devotees that will stay with them for years to come. Level 3 is for Program Leads -- department heads and other academic leaders who are leading the charge to implement R.E.A.L. schoolwide, often in conjunction with other initiatives. All three R.E.A.L. levels will get to intersect with each other, and of course, with the participants in the other EIGHT Grauer Summer Institutes. I wanted to expand on my recent post about my 90-day plan for SHPE Los Angeles. 1. Gather Feedback: Conduct surveys and interviews with students and professionals. The WHY: To continuously improve, we need feedback mechanisms to understand the ever-changing landscape of students and professionals. The TAKEAWAY: ASK FOR SPECIFICS! A great resource for this is The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick. One key takeaway that resonated with me is to ask questions about specific events that recently happened to get a more accurate picture of their experience. Instead of asking vague or leading questions like "Do you like our events and what would you like to see more of from SHPE LA?", we should be asking, "Can you walk me through the last event you attended and describe your experience?" This approach encourages honest and actionable feedback. Stay tuned for #2 and #3...
