Recipient Impact Stories | Massey Community Trust Auckland Foundation is pleased to have supported Massey Community Trust through a recent grant for their Safety Net Project. The Safety Net Project is a community-driven, youth-centred initiative aimed at ensuring that young people’s experience of homelessness is brief, rare, and non-recurring. This crucial work is all about empowering community, mobilising community resources and caring adults and communicating to rangatahi that their community cares and is putting that care into action by literally opening up their doors. Our friends @Justlife carried out research into women’s experiences of homelessness in Brighton & Hove. It’s a story of domestic violence, unhealthy relationships, complex feelings around motherhood and lack of basic safety while in temporary accommodation. We’re fundraising this week to create a year-long programme of free dance classes with and for women who have experienced homelessness. Our team at Whitmore Property recently had the privilege of volunteering with Backpacks 4 SA Kids, sorting and packing essential items for children in need. Since its inception in 2012, Backpacks 4 SA Kids has grown tremendously, helping 540 children in its first year and now assisting over 6,500 children and around 1,000 carers annually. This incredible organisation provides emergency backpacks filled with clothing, toiletries, and comfort items for children aged 0-16 facing neglect, abuse, family violence, or homelessness. These backpacks offer a sense of ownership and comfort to children and young people who often leave home with little or no notice, lacking essential items. Did you know? - In 2021–22, around 1 in 32 (178,000) Australian children under 18 came into contact with the child protection system. - About 1 in 124 (45,500) Australian children under 18 became subjects of substantiated maltreatment. 3 Takeaways from a visit from Jeremy White CMgr FCMI Head of National Partnerships at Homeless Link:   A big thank you to Jeremy for coming to visit HOPE worldwide homeless services (Two Step) earlier this month. It was so helpful to get his perspective on questions we are wrestling with and the challenges we are facing. He helped us with resources, relationships and reassurance!   Resources: Ideas for reflective practice for helping staff cope with the strains of the job 'Tackling Hate Crime' resources from Homeless Link to help us respond to and prepare for events like the recent riots   Relationships: Senior team members were able to get to know a wise and knowledgeable senior leader in the sector and ask him questions directly Sharing our questions, thoughts and reflections together helped us grow closer as a team   Reassurance: There are no easy answers to the housing crisis in London and we are doing good work We are asking the right questions and Homeless Link are there to help!
