Most of us content marketers consider the content side of SEO at the very beginning of any project; we’ve become adept at marrying ideas with the right keywords, information, and heading structures so that the message and SEO go together harmoniously—like peanut butter and jelly. Technical SEO, on the other hand, might not be as fully understood. We know it’s important, but it’s often left up to SEO or IT teams. That doesn’t mean content marketers can’t grasp and implement the basics of technical SEO to complement a great marketing strategy. That’s where technical SEO comes in. When you optimise your website’s tech aspects, you make it easier for search engines like Google to find, crawl, and rank it. SEO Content Pruning Search engines favor websites with authoritative and useful content. Outdated or thin content can weaken your overall SEO efforts and lower your rankings. Content pruning removes underperforming pages that no longer add value, letting search engines focus on your best work. Here’s How To Prune Your Content Effectively? 1. Conduct a Full Content Audit Gather data on all your website’s pages, including traffic, engagement, etc. Google Analytics, Search Console, Screaming Frog, and Keyword Metrics Ahrefs can all help here. 2. Analyze Content Performance Use the data to evaluate which pages are adding value to your website based on: Organic traffic Engagement (e.g., time on page, comments, social shares) Backlinks and authority Conversion rates Flag low-performing pages for pruning. 3. Decide What to Keep, Update, or Delete Categorize your underperforming content into three groups: Keep: Pages that perform well or are still relevant. Update: Pages that are outdated but have potential. Delete: Pages that offer no value (e.g., duplicates, thin content, or irrelevant material). 4. Consolidate Thin or Similar Content If you have several thin articles on similar topics, consider merging them into one comprehensive, high-quality post. This reduces redundancy and strengthens your site’s topical authority. 5. Revamp Outdated Content For content worth keeping, refresh it with updated information, improved keywords, or better visuals. Fix broken links, enhance readability, and ensure the content aligns with your current SEO strategy. 6. Remove Irrelevant or Harmful Content Remove pages that are outdated, irrelevant, or no longer useful. This can improve your site’s crawlability and prevent search engines from indexing low-quality pages. Use 301 redirects where necessary to avoid broken links. 7. Monitor the Results After pruning, keep an eye on your website’s performance. Look for improvements in rankings, traffic, and user engagement. #contenplanning #contentcovarge #onpageSEO #keywordmapping #technicalSEO #SEOaudit
