#WayBackWednesday! Is that a thing? Well I'm making it a thing since I'm talking about a project we did that was pre-COVID… seems pretty WAAAAAY back to me, am I right? Bennett & Pless, Inc. loves a challenge like this one. Check out The Boundary: The Boundary - three existing buildings located at 1389, 1401, and 1409 Peachtree Street. NE were originally constructed at different times spanning from the 1950’s to the 1980’s and had both residential and commercial spaces within the buildings. The constraints of 40+ year-old buildings with multiple modifications and additions and no structural information, created numerous structural engineering challenges during design and construction. However; one consistent focus was to incorporate the new design with the existing buildings. We used existing foundations, columns, walls and masonry. Multiple senior engineers, combined with ingenious thinking, developed efficient use of the existing elements of the structure. Top Complex Challenges: Lack of original design documents Occupied buildings during investigation and design Preservation of load-bearing masonry walls Unknown foundation designs Aging structures with mixed materials Innovative Techniques: Leveraged existing masonry walls to minimize demolition, preserving the buildings' characteristics and reducing costs. This structure was designed to provide maximum stability and efficiency, utilizing various steel profiles, including HE400A, HE300B, HE200A, and custom-tapered beams. Each profile was carefully selected to meet the structural requirements while optimizing material use. Key highlights of the design: Custom Tapered Beams: Balancing strength and material efficiency. ✅Southampton Stairs ✅South Western Railway INVVU were instructed by South Western Railway to carry out the initial survey and undertake the architectural feasibility option design for a new staircase, to replace the existing one on an embankment at Southampton Central Station. The feasibility design has been completed with a structural design report covering the GRIP 4 stage design of the proposed staircase option. INVVU proposed the most suitable option based on the client's requirements while minimising the design process time. Although the project is relatively small in scale, the proposed design includes an in-situ reinforced concrete (RC) retaining wall and foundation base, a prefabricated steel staircase, and mini pile/screw pile foundations. This approach ensures the most economical solution, considering the full life cycle of the design. #architecture #structuralengineering #designlifecycle #staircase #rail #station
