Chemical Engineering Jobs 101: The 3 Aspects of Chemical Engineering Jobs You Should Consider When Deciding on a Job (Other Than Money 💰).
Deciding where to work is such a pivotal and important decision; it sets the tone and direction of your career.
Of course, money is important, but as chemical engineers who expect to make $80,000 or more in their first job out of college, we should consider other aspects of the job to see if they align with our future goals.
So here are 3 aspects of chemical engineering jobs you should consider:
1️⃣ Culture 🤝
Cultural fit is so important to businesses that they look for it in interviews, so it makes sense that it should also be important to us.
To steal a "Bluelock" concept, a company is like a fishbowl, and the culture is the water. As employees, we are the fish; we can swim, die, or even, in rare cases, dye the water our own color. Environments can be cooperative, competitive, hectic, calm, require 24/7 loyalty, and/or stress work-life balance.
It is worth considering in what "water" we can best swim and thrive in.
2️⃣ Surrounding location 🏭
If you didn't know by now, you will probably be working in a chemical plant situated out in the middle of nowhere.
Here are some things worth noting about your potential job location:
• How far to the nearest city (and an airport)?
• What types of things can I do around the area and do they align with my interests?
• What are the locals like and are there communities you can join?
• What is the WEATHER? (Do you have seasons, crazy heat, lots of snow?)
Shameless plug for Gulf Coast living: 15 min away from a beach and tons of good birding spots nearby. Unfortunately, this post was not sponsored 🤪
3️⃣ Benefits 🏥
Most people don't realize this, but work is not your life.
Outside of work, you have to take care of all the fun "adulting" things: car insurance, medical insurance, 401k, dental, etc. The worst thing you can do is sign on to a company that pays the big bucks but then leaves you to get all the work of getting all your insurance set up. Look into the 401k match and the insurance policies, ask questions, and understand what you are signing up for.
So consider these 3 job aspects beforehand; your life and your career will thank you for your foresight.
