Schaeffler REPXPERT UK Update - Diagnosing faults on tie rods and axial ball joints is the topic of Schaeffler’s new REPXPERT technical update.“Chassis components, including tie rods and axial ball joints, are subject to extreme wear,” said Alistair Mason, Technical Manager at Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd. “This is then exacerbated by operating conditions and environmental influences, such as extremely poor roads. Technicians need to look out for the tell-tale signs that suggest a problem.” Starting with a damaged boot, the likely causes include water or salt contamination, as well as material wear, resulting in premature wear of the ball joint and socket, along with noise during load cycles or when driving on uneven surfaces. Associated bushes and joints can also be affected. Tie rod ends can degrade due to the impact of increased forces on the joint, such as curbing or pothole impact. Other causes include impact from debris, such as stone chips, and increasing porosity. This wears down the ball and socket joint, leading to surface rust, corrosion and premature failure.
