MAD architects’ Post

We’re excited to share the latest construction update for Lishui (LIJ) Airport, which is nearing completion and set to open by the end of 2024. Designed to harmonize with the mountainous terrain of Lishui, the airport features a terraced layout that follows the natural contours of the land, integrating the terminal, parking, and office areas into descending platforms. This approach creates a piece of infrastructure that blends functionality with a deep connection to its surroundings. The 12,000-square-meter terminal prioritizes an intimate, human-centered travel experience. A flowing, silver-white roof supported by 14 umbrella-shaped columns brings natural light into the space, while wood-toned finishes and a compact one-and-a-half-story design create a sense of comfort and efficiency. By integrating architecture and landscape, Lishui Airport reflects the city’s identity as a “forest city,” offering a welcoming experience that balances nature and convenience. With an initial capacity of one million passengers annually, expandable to five million by 2050, the design ensures the airport can grow alongside the region’s needs while staying rooted in its connection to the land. #LishuiAirport #MaYansong #MADarchitects #InfrastructureDesign #ArchitectureAndNature #Airport #Architecture #Design #Lishui
