What is the human toll of the 1914-1918 war? Human losses in the First World War amounted to approximately 18.6 million deaths. This number includes 9.7 million military deaths and 8.9 million civilian deaths. And then the human toll of the 1940-1945 war? The human toll is catastrophic: between 60 and 80 million dead, several million injured, 30 million Europeans displaced due to border changes, especially in Eastern Europe.

This saying reminds us that despite peace being a life-giving force, we should always be prepared for war. If we fail to prepare for war during times of peace, our resilience weakens when confronted with conflict. Similarly, if we don't prepare for peace during times of war, we limit ourselves to the boundaries of compromise, losing the ability to manage situations effectively. We continue our series on Zimbabwe, looking at the evolution of the country in the build-up to Independence. Off-duty white Rhodesian soldiers would often wait along main roads, including routes leading to Salisbury (now Harare), for transport back after completing duty in operational areas. During the Rhodesian Bush War, these soldiers were frequently deployed to rural and conflict-heavy zones where they engaged in counter-insurgency operations against guerrilla fighters from liberation movements like ZANLA and ZIPRA. When their duty rotations ended, they would return to urban centers like Salisbury, awaiting transport along main roads, which were crucial arteries for moving personnel between frontlines and more secure urban areas. Cover your face before talking about the head of state who fled the war. But to calm everyone, everyone should promote this freedom with the participation of the army chief or senior citizens to make everyone behave normally. Jordanian tribes speak up for the Palestinians, saying that they're more Palestinian than they're Jordanian. The rest of the Ummah feels the same, whether in Egypt or Iraq, Morocco or Pakistan. Gaza has rekindled within the Ummah, that which gives the divisive rulers nightmares. The longing for political unity. In this scenario the (so-called) rules based order is a major hurdle in the Ummah's unification. But the genocide in Gaza (and the western response compared with Ukraine) has precipitated the decline of this global order. Ishaan Tharoor, a columnist for The Washington Post, writes: "Western leaders may see in Ukraine the defense of the 'rules-based order' against Russian brutishness, but in the ongoing calamity in Gaza, it’s easy to also see its breakdown." https://lnkd.in/dE4bgM4V Tharoor points out that the rules-based order has always been a selective and self-serving construct, used by the West to justify its interventions and interests, while ignoring or enabling the violations and atrocities of its allies, such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. He also notes that the rules-based order has been undermined by the very countries that created the system, such as the United States, which has flouted international law and human rights in its wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. Agbes Callamard, the current secretary general of Amnesty International, argues in Foreign Affairs that after 9/11, the United States embarked on its "war on te¥¥or," a campaign that normalized the idea that everything is permissible in the pursuit of "te¥¥o¥ists." To prosecute its war in Gaza, Israel borrows ethos, strategy, and tactics from that framework, doing so with the support of the United States. For too long, the Ummah has been subjected to artificial political divisions within this global order. It is natural for the Ummah to demand a reversal of the colonial carve-up of the Muslim world, to be unified under a single polity. Islam gives a just and compassionate alternative to this unjust and cruel global order.
