The Innovative Actions on New European Bauhaus are ready to start! The kick-off meeting of all the experts of the European Urban Initiative Innovative Actions projects held yesterday was an important opportunity for defining how to support the cities which are going to deliver tangible, real-life examples of New European Bauhaus while integrating different dimensions of urban sustainability. As expert of S4T-Station for Transformation I will support Rovereto (Italy) in regenerating its Alpine cultural heritage through the creation of a Green Innovation Hub. A stronger connection with other Innovative Actions projects will foster the exchange of knowledge among cities and the replicability of solutions combining the distinctive NEB dimensions of sustainability, quality of experience and inclusion

1️⃣ Day 1 of the Urban Future. #Rotterdam conference: a great Placemaking Western Balkans Municipality of Celje / Mestna Občina Celje session, and wonderful speakers Monika Tominšek Małgorzata Ćwikła, PhD ICLEI Europe and Alexandru Stan @IN2 🔥 The discussion between the speakers and the audience was built around several “burning questions” bringing new insights to the surface: ❓ What does it mean to be urban planner working for municipality on the heritage renewal projects and is it attractive for young architecture and design professionals to work for the city rather than working in a private practice on heritage-inspired projects ? ❓ Why is it still difficult to motivate bottom up heritage projects and what makes those cities who got it right successful? ❓ Can citizens determine what is heritage from their point of view and make city officials listen to them, or is definition of heritage exclusive right of cultural institutions only? ❓ Are digital tools making heritage closer to everyone, what is their role in sustainable, regenerative tourism as opposite to “extractive” tourism? ➡ Full overview of the "Cool Answers to Burning Questions on Redoing Heritage" will be available at our Placemaking Western Balkans BLOG dedicated to the Redoing Heritage interactive session, starting from 10th of June. Stay tuned, mark the day for a good read! #placemaking #publicspace #built #nontangible #heritage #regeneration #digitaltools

Drawing on ancient architectural wisdom and modern advancements, green architecture aims to enhance #sustainability in urban environments, playing a key role in combating #climatechange
From congested urban highway, into vibrant green space 🌳 In the 1970’s, Madrid was cut off from the Manzanares river by the construction of the M30 ring motorway - the busiest in the country. In a bid to reconnect the community with the river, the Madrid Río Project was launched in 2004 to turn sections of the motorway into a lush riverside park that extends over 7.5 kilometers. This ambitious urban renewal project buried the highway underground, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy riverfront views, bike paths, and open spaces where there were once only cars and noise. The space was also designed to encourage trees to flourish for plenty of shade and the reengineered riverbank now has containers that can collect the excess water produced by 500 year flood events. Madrid Río now stands as a powerful example of how cities can prioritise people over cars, creating more liveable, sustainable urban environments. As cities around the world look for ways to address similar challenges, our dialogues at #WUF12 will spotlight how local actions, like Madrid's, can inspire sustainable urban transformation globally. "A closed loop for materials exists at the planetary scale, but Life’s material cycles are nested and interconnected across all scales. At the ILFI Living Future Conference, Biomimicry 3.8’s Zeynep Ahron took the stage with Interface to talk about how Nature’s material cycling strategies, and in particular Life’s Principles, can inspire new ways of thinking to address existing shortcomings and failures of existing circular design approaches. " Here is more about the work of this organization. Bravo https://lnkd.in/eDtrBpUR

🇵🇹 Lisbon's connection to the Tagus River and its waterways shapes its identity. However, urban development, like the Cascais trainline, has created barriers to this natural bond. The innovative project "Hydroscope Lisbon" aims to change that. Designed by young architect Ilia (Ioulia) Voulgari, it seeks to unlock the potential of Lisbon's harbour, celebrating its 💧 water resources while addressing pressing issues of urban living and sustainability. At the heart of the proposal lies a transformative vision: a 14km urban park stretching along Lisbon's coastline, seamlessly integrating with the city's existing natural elements. Central to this vision is the incorporation of a state-of-the-art water treatment centre and bathhouse, positioned strategically at the convergence of underground water flows and the Tagus River. But "Hydroscope Lisbon" is more than just infrastructure; it's a testament to Lisbon's resilience and adaptability in the face of climate change. By reclaiming the harbour and revitalizing the riverfront, the project aims to redefine the city's relationship with water on both a territorial and human scale. With "Hydroscope Lisbon," Lisbon can pave the way for a greener, more inclusive future. Recognized in the 🇪🇺 2024 NEB Prizes 🏆, the project showcases how cities can embrace nature while engaging communities in sustainable practices. This is why I love working with the #15minutecity concept in my workshops and talks! An opportunity to help shape awareness 💡 At the dynamic EYL40 European Young Leaders in Paris last month, during my talk on the 15-minute city concept related to urban resilience and quality of life, we put up this question on Slido. 'What is your level of familiarity with the 15-minute city concept?' Response Options: •I am extremely familiar with the concept and working with it in my community. •I am well-read on the concept •I have some awareness of the concept but could learn more •I have never heard of it before It was exciting to learn that I was interfacing with a dynamic group of young European leaders, some of whom are actively working with the concept of proximity planning in their communities, some of whom were curious to learn more, and some of whom were hearing about it for the first time. In my social moments with many of the leaders, I heard lots of juicy reflections about how the concept was manifest (or not) in their own communities. For example, Finland-based Olympic swimmer Ari-Pekka Liukkonen shared with me that this is a reality in his community where everything he needs "is around 1-2km from my home and bike is faster than car". Stay tuned as I will be doing an interview with Ari on this later this month. A core part of my outreach and communication on the 15-minute city (also referring to 20-minute city, 20-minute neighborhood and related) is about: •helping to educate on the concept •emphasizing the importance of centering spatial equity when prioritizing the concept as a principle for urban development •helping to mitigate miscommunication, controversy & misunderstanding about the concept Thank you Friends of Europe and Chaire ETI - IAE Paris Sorbonne School for the opportunity!
