We're delighted to support South Eastern Regional College to extend their 'We Can Engineer It' programme to secondary schools in the local area. Our funding will support resources and staff to conduct a series of interactive workshops for secondary school students. These will incorporate a specially devised engineering game and various hands-on engineering activities to introduce students to the exciting field of engineering. We Can Engineer It helps young people, especially females, excel in the industry. Aine McGreeghan, Principal Lecturer for the School of Engineering and Science at SERC said, “Engineering offers endless opportunities for innovation, problem-solving, and creativity. However, many young people from deprived communities do not have access to the resources or guidance needed to explore careers in engineering. To help address this disparity, our engineering workshops are specifically designed for young people who face economic challenges and will provide the necessary exposure, education, and hands-on experience to spark their interest in engineering and inspire them to pursue a career in the field.” The workshops are scheduled for spring and summer of 2025. #engineering #stem #education #livery

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $1.2M to #TEESresearch for a project led by Dr. Garth V. Crosby, aiming to prepare middle and high school teachers to excel in teaching engineering concepts. This initiative addresses the vital need for skilled engineering educators in secondary classrooms. Upon graduation, students will be qualified STEM professionals who are well-equipped to teach students who represent the full spectrum of talent for the next generation of engineers. I am proud to share that our position improved this year in the closely watched U.S. News & World Report Best Engineering Schools rankings. We jumped to become the #11 engineering school in the nation, up from #12 last year. Among the nation's public engineering schools, we rose to #7 in the nation, up from #8 last year. And there is even more fantastic news. This is the first year U.S. News has broadened the inputs of the rankings to include citation metrics. Citations are technically when our peer institutions cite our work, and I interpret our citations as additional affirmation that our work is state-of-the-art. When citation measures were added to the U.S. News rankings, our overall position rose.   In fact, we rank #1 in the nation among public engineering schools for citations per publication – and #5 in the nation overall in this category. I consider this citation ranking as a measure of our world-class thought leadership. To our graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, faculty and staff – and to every single person inside and outside the Jacobs School who works behind the scenes to keep our education, research and innovation enterprise thriving – thank you! #TechyThursday: FRA supported Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech), in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University Altoona (Penn State Altoona) and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), to establish a Tracks to the Future: Railroad Transportation and Engineering summer program for high school students.  The report describes Phase 1 of this program, which was offered in both a traditional, week-long, on-campus program and a hybrid (virtual and in person) version of the program at three different universities. More than 8,000 students had applied for one of DTU’s engineering programmes this year, an increase of 8%. However, DTU is admitting slightly fewer students than last year due to political restrictions on the university’s admissions. “We’ve got full admission on virtually all study programmes, which is fantastic,” says Lars D.
