I had the iconic Nokia 3310 (and a pager 😆) in the early 2000s when I was a reporter. I remember seeing the device go from dominating the mobile phone industry to essentially obsolete in the span of a year when iPhone emerged. How intriguing to now be on the precipice of a similar sea change - but this time in automotive, with the emergence of software-defined vehicles, which promise to bring automakers $150B in annual subscription revenue alone and allow drivers (for a price) to upgrade their cockpit or change the exterior paint color with the push of a button. Ferrari Shifts Gears: No More Built-in Navigation, Hello Smartphone Power Ferrari is making a navigation system switch, opting out of built-in options in favor of smartphone mirroring. This means future Ferrari models, including the Purosangue SUV and the 12Cilindri supercar, will rely on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for navigation. Ferrari believes this approach offers a more user-friendly and up-to-date experience, aligning with comments from CEO Benedetto Vigna who noted most owners use phones for navigation anyway. The move comes as the auto industry grapples with navigation solutions. While Ferrari embraces smartphone mirroring, others like General Motors are developing their in-house systems. Tesla and Rivian are also forging their own navigation paths. Meanwhile, the battle for infotainment dominance continues. More carmakers are adopting Android-based systems, and Apple is pushing for deeper in-car integration with the next-gen CarPlay.
