Mexican cartels are operating with impunity around Ternium and ArcelorMittal mine sites, according to a shocking new The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project report, that details forced disappearances of community activists and other human rights abuses of people standing up in opposition to ArcelorMittal and Ternium mines. Antonio Diaz and his lawyer vanished after leaving a community meeting. These activists were taking a stand against a mine that local community members claimed devastated their environment. Ternium and ArcelorMittal have firmly rejected any direct or indirect association with or responsibility for the perpetrators of violence. But both are facing serious questions about how such human rights abuses continue to happen around their facilities. Intimidation or use of violence against activists fighting for Indigenous rights and environmental justice must not be tolerated. We expect steel companies to investigate the shocking details outlined by OCCRP and stand up firmly for the rights of environmental defenders. To paraphrase Mark Bristow from the leadership roundtable at MINExpo INTERNATIONAL -- 'We can't grow to meet demand by M&A, that is just rearranging the deck chairs. We need exploration and new mines to meet the rising demand for critical metals and minerals' The exponentially growing green markets - EV, solar, electrification - are hungry for lithium, copper, rare earths, etc. We are going to need a lot more of these materials to come out of the ground to meet any of the world's goals on emissions. And in every case, there will be compelling reasons not to have a mine in a particular location. If you want to explore the tension between these competing critical objectives, I'd highly recommend _The War Below_. Have you read it?

It may seem counterintuitive for the metals and mining industry to champion a circular economy, but the reality is clear: the world’s resources are finite, and public expectations around environmental and ecological responsibility are rising. The way we do business must evolve. At Norsk Hydro, aluminium recycling is a cornerstone of our strategy. It’s a win for energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and economic performance. For every ton of aluminium we recycle, we reduce the need for mining and refining—lowering emissions and minimizing the environmental footprint of a material critical to modern life. In today’s panel discussion at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, I was especially pleased to showcase our ambitious partnership with Volvo Group. Andrea Fuder and I highlighted how we are raising the bar on carbon intensity and circularity across the value chain — from mine to metal and into Volvo’s products, including excavators and heavy-duty trucks. Thank you also to Gustavo Pimenta of Vale, Marc de Wit of Circle Economy Consulting, and to ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan for excellent moderation of an insightful discussion.

3 years ago, #Tesla was considered 'middle of the pack' or even a laggard in external rankings on its responsible sourcing. Today, our battery responsible sourcing program was recognized as a leader amongst #EV producers, ranking 2nd in Amnesty International's report on human rights in EV supply chains. Amnesty called our disclosure of #cobalt, #nickel, #lithium sources "a model for others to follow" and highlighted our site visits; community meetings; measures to address forced labor; detailed efforts, incl. on indigenous rights, in #Indonesia; support for responsible ASM in the #DRC; and leveraging our direct sourcing for corrective actions from our #mining suppliers such as developing environmental management plans. We take note of the constructive feedback to continue to improve our program. Report: https://lnkd.in/gMQxdYQD

Critical minerals are essential to meet our climate goals and transition to a prosperous net-zero economy. ⛏️ Since June this year, Sweden is part of the Sustainable Critical Mineral Alliance, (SCMA), together with USA, Australia, France, Japan, Canada, UK, and Germany. SCMA was founded as an initiative to secure sustainable and responsible methods for mining and the recycling of critical minerals, while encouraging support and cooperation between indigenous communities and industry. 🪨 Did you know that the largest deposit of minable Rare Earth Elements (REE) in Europe was discovered in Kiruna in 2023. #IntheSpiritofNobel #SCMA 📸: LKAB
