I was cleaning up my photo drive and found this photo of me in 2019 talking about technology scouting to a group of MIP Politecnico di Milano's EMBAs. It reminded me that, among many other projects, between 2013 and 2018 I worked on a long-term, multi-client startup scouting program for a consortium of large, brand-name corporates. We selected a total of 167 startups for the program. It's been about 10 years since the start of that program, the duration of a typical VC fund, so I got curious and went back to Crunchbase to see where those startups have ended up: - 75 shut down or sort of went sideways - 57 were acquired through M&A - 30 are still operating independently - 4 were taken over by a PE fund - 1 IPO'ed on NASDAQ - In aggregate, they raised a whopping $9.5 billion in funding!
