Did you know? In August 2020, one of the largest studies on #Neurodiversity and #GenderIdentity was conducted. It found that autistic people were three to six times more likely to identify as gender-diverse, meaning they did not identify with their sex assigned at birth. While there are many theories around why this high correlation exists, it's crucial that clinicians, caregivers, and others who support individuals with #Autism break down stereotypes and learn how to better support gender-diverse individuals. Additionally, they may exhibit signs of discomfort or distress, such as low self-esteem, social withdrawal, depression, anxiety, engaging in unnecessary risks, or neglecting themselves. The exact cause of gender dysphoria remains unclear. Gender development is a complex process, and there are still aspects that are not fully understood or known. It is important to note that gender dysphoria is not linked to sexual orientation. Individuals with gender dysphoria may identify as straight, gay, lesbian, or bisexual. In the past, psychotherapy was the primary treatment for gender dysphoria, focusing on helping individuals adjust to their assigned sex. Psychotherapy refers to any therapeutic interaction aimed at addressing psychological issues.
