Tata Motors Pune plant, a cornerstone of innovation and productivity, is at the heart of the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial belt in Pune, Maharashtra. With about 1,300 women assembling trucks of all categories, the plant has seen a remarkable increase in gender diversity. Two years ago, the percentage of women in the workforce was a mere 2.7%, and today, it stands at 14%. Taking a stride towards inclusivity, the plant plans to embrace transgender and hearing-impaired individuals to enrich its shopfloor community. At EKAM 2024, the Inspire & Impact Series brought forth some of the most pressing questions of our time urging us to address the Future of Inclusion – Are YOU Going to Be Left Behind? Amrita G., Chief Diversity Officer at Tata Motors Ltd., challenged the audience with a thought-provoking question: If 49% of society is made up of women, why do many workplaces struggle to reflect that reality? In her session on inclusion, Ganguly pushed leaders to think beyond surface-level diversity initiatives and consider the deep, systemic changes necessary to bridge historical gaps that have left entire communities marginalized. Sharing Tata Motors’ transformative journey, she recounted their efforts to create a fully women-operated assembly line. Through significant investments—ranging from equipment adaptations to psychological safety programs—Tata Motors has redefined what inclusion can look like, with 1,700–2,000 women now running the assembly line for Tata Safari and Harrier SUVs. Ganguly highlighted that diversity is not just about fairness; there’s a strong, data-backed business case for inclusion. With projections showing a substantial global GDP boost if inclusivity is prioritized, she argued that ignoring it could lead to widening inequalities and unsustainable business practices.
