In December we presented government with our Acute Care Stabilization Proposal, a framework solution that cuts across the system aligning payment models and incentives while stabilizing acute patient care allowing Alberta to be competitive in physician retention and recruitment. https://lnkd.in/g-hp-RPc Government has not yet responded to this solution-focused framework. Meanwhile, we see more evidence every day of the collapse that we have been warning about for years. In cancer care, we have a devastating shortage of oncologists. Patients wait 8-9 weeks beyond the four-week benchmark. While in general surgery, a lack of Tier one support staff is causing patient diversions to other hospitals for emergency surgery. This is not safe. https://lnkd.in/gj-47B9C Government reported with data from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) a net increase of 332 physicians in the last year, yet we are still in a deficit from a loss of 2,471 docs from 2019 -2023. We still face unprecedented vacancies in family medicine residency spots and other specialties while the population grows. https://lnkd.in/gYZgPE7w There are solutions and there is no time to lose. I believe government sees the problems but I am worried that they don’t see the urgency. Physicians see it. The health care teams see it. So do our patients. Does government? I'm an obsessive podcast listener and can usually rattle off a handful of good ones for someone to listen to based on a variety of interests and topics. Last week I encountered one on palliative medicine titled "why doctors die differently than their patients." I was immediately intrigued, listened and went down several rabbit holes reading articles on the topic! What it ultimately comes down to is that medical professionals often set up either/or scenarios to treat an illness or disease. Due to the current healthcare structure they often don't take the time to do a deep dive with patients to talk about the downsides and ultimately EMPOWER patients to make the choice that is right for them based on their beliefs and most important goals. The two doctors on this podcast do an excellent job explaining how palliative matters and how valuable the doctors are who educate and advocate for their patients and their families. If you have time in the car or while doing laundry to listen, please do and share your thoughts! Why do doctors die differently than their patients? What's unusual about doctors is not how much treatment they get as their patients, but how little. Careers in medicine have taught them about the limits of treatments and more importantly-how to plan ahead. The most important work our team of palliative care clinicians do is to provide advice and guidance to patients and their families based on their unique wants and wishes to give them a higher quality of life experience. The primary care crisis in British Columbia is a growing concern, with nearly a million residents lacking access to a family doctor. Doctors of BC has played a critical role in developing the new Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) Payment Model in partnership with BC Family Doctors and the provincial government. This model addresses key challenges like rising business costs, physician burnout, and the need for more equitable compensation. It also emphasizes flexibility in practice, ensuring that physicians can deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. This progress is a step toward stabilizing primary care in BC. https://lnkd.in/gCaEAxH8 Ross Aberdein Rob Wild Ryan Kinsella Miriam Zemel

In many communities, we are taught to treat others as we would like to be treated, but that is not the whole story. When we focus on patient centered care, we use the "platinum rule" to put the patient's story and wishes first. Please read Tari Advani's blog post about Dr. Harvey Chochinov's "platinum rule" theory here: https://lnkd.in/gXizphAH

EDPMA Comments on Equity of Emergency Care Capacity and Quality eCQM CMS with Yale New Haven Health Services Corporation – Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) to develop a measure that captures variation in equity, capacity and quality of emergency care. The developers recently released for public comment a draft Equity of Emergency Care Capacity and Quality electronic clinical quality measure (eCQM), which aims to capture established outcome metrics that quantify capacity and access of care in an emergency department (ED). This measure, which was developed for potential future use under the Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting Program, targets patients of all ages and all visits that occur at an ED, but evaluates two separate cohorts: patients without behavioral health disorders and patients with behavioral health disorders. Today, EDPMA submitted feedback in support of the measure, but requested that the developers ensure that the measure does not hold EDs accountable for delays in care due to factors outside of the ED’s direct control. https://lnkd.in/gMV_uR-F
