⚽ UEFA EURO 2024 UPDATE: Teams through to the Round of 16 ⚽ 🏟 The group stage is over, and the 24 teams that started the UEFA EURO 2024 on June 14 have been whittled down to just 16 for the knockout rounds. With six group winners, six group runners-up and the four best third-place teams advancing to the Round of 16, which kicks off on June 29. The Round of 16 matches are split into two halves, and each will produce a finalist who will compete to lift the Henri Delaunay Cup 🏆 in Berlin on July 14. 🥅 Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, Denmark, and Belgium qualified for the first half of the Round of 16 bracket. The other half includes Switzerland, Italy, Austria, England, Romania, and Turkey. Netherlands, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Georgia also qualified for the Round of 16 as one of four best third-place finishers. 🥇 The Round of 16 is known as the knockout rounds because there are no points earned, just single elimination from here on out. Each knockout-round match and all subsequent matches of the championship, through to the final, must have a winner on the day. This means that if teams are tied after 90 minutes, the match will go into a 30-minute period of extra time.⏱ 📺 Here are the Round of 16 schedule dates and fixtures: Switzerland vs Italy (Sat 29 June) Germany vs Denmark (Sat 29 June) England vs Slovakia (Sun 30 June) Spain vs Georgia (Sun 30 June) France vs Belgium (Mon 1 July) Portugal vs Slovenia (Mon 1 July) Romania vs Netherlands (Tue 2 July) Austria vs Turkey (Tue 2 July) #Euro2024 #Roundof16

The second day of the round of sixteen at UEFA EURO 2024 is Sunday, 30. June. Here are the two matches taking place in Germany, involving two of Europe's powerhouses and two surprise teams with impressive styles of play. 🏴 ENGLAND vs. SLOVAKIA 🇸🇰 (18.00 - GELSENKIRCHEN): - England finished undefeated in the group stage, with a 1-2-0 record in a group they were expected to dominate; their only victory came 1-0 vs. Serbia, and their two draws since then were 1-1 vs. Denmark and 0-0 vs. Slovenia. Slovakia finished with one less point in a group where all four teams finished tied on points (the first time in EURO history), 1-1-1 and third in the group with a 1-0 upset over Belgium, 1-2 vs. Ukraine, and a 1-1 draw vs. Romania that saw both teams go through. - England are 5-1-0 against Slovakia in their history, with a 2-1 win in 2017 being the most recent encounter. These two teams did play at UEFA EURO 2016 however, and it was a 0-0 draw; Slovakia are looking to count on that and England's recent record to pull off a possible extra time upset here. - England are the heavy favourite, with Google predicting them to have a 67 % chance of winning in the ninety; there is a 22 % chance of extra time and an 11 % chance of Slovakia taking the match. 🇪🇸 SPAIN vs. GEORGIA 🇬🇪 (21.00 - COLOGNE): - Spain are the only perfect team at this European Championship with a 3-0-0 record without conceding a single goal; add in the fact that they did it in the toughest group out of all of them and they are now the heavy favourite to win the tournament, with a 3-0 win vs. Croatia, 1-0 vs. Italy, and 1-0 vs. Albania. They take on Georgia, who defeated a similar tiki-taka tactic used by Portugal in their first win in EURO history, a 2-0 result that saw them advance with a 1-1-1 record and third in Group F after losing their opening match with Türkiye and drawing their previous match 1-1 with Czechia - they are looking to count on that to defeat a Spanish squad that plays much the same way. - Spain and Georgia were drawn in the same World Cup qualifying group and EURO qualifying group in the last four years, and the results were this: 2-1 to Spain away, 4-0 to Spain at home (WC), 7-1 to Spain away, 3-1 to Spain at home (EURO). A 7-1 result in a knockout match is almost impossible, but recent history is on Spain's side for this one to score at least three goals, possibly even in one half like they did with Croatia. - Google says there is an 81 % chance of Spain winning, a 13 % chance of a draw, and a 6 % chance of Georgia making it in their already history-making tournament. If Georgia defy the odds, it would cause great joy across their country; they have 90 + another possible 30 difficult minutes to get through first before quarterfinal football is considered. Should be a great day of football as the knockout stage is underway! #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #germany #england #slovakia #slovensko #spain #españa #georgia #საქართველო

Spain wins 2024 UEFA Euro Cup beating England 2-1 in final The goals for Spain were scored by Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal BERLIN, July 15/ The national football team of Spain won the 2024 UEFA Euro Cup edging out Team England 2-1 in the final match of the prestigious European football tournament in Berlin late on Sunday night. The goals for Spain were scored by Nico Williams (47th minute) and Mikel Oyarzabal (86th) minute. Cole Palmer scored for England in the 73rd minute of the match. Spain is now the most titled national team of the UEFA Euro Cups as it won the European championship four times already - in 1964, 2008, 2012 and in 2024. It is followed by Germany, which won the Euro Cups in 1972, 1980 and 1996. It was a second straight defeat for England in the Euro Cup finals. At the previous Euro Cup in 2020 England also reached the final, where it lost to Italy in a penalty shootout (1-1; 2-3). Team England never won a UEFA Euro Cup. Spain started the championship in Group B and won all three matches defeating Croatia 3-0, Italy 1-0 and Albania 1-0. Day 4 of UEFA EURO 2024 is Monday, 17. June. Here is the daily schedule: 🇷🇴 ROMANIA vs. UKRAINE 🇺🇦 (GROUP E - 15.00, MUNICH): - Romania finished first in their qualifying group, placing above a Swiss team ranked higher than them with an undefeated 6-4-0 record in qualifiers. Edward Iordănescu's side will take on a Ukrainian squad that defeated both Bosnia/Herzegovina and Iceland to book one of the final three spots at this tournament through the playoff - in qualifiers, the Ukrainians finished third in a difficult group involving England and Italy. - Romania and Ukraine have not faced each other since May 2016, which was a 4-3 win for Ukraine in a pre-EURO international friendly. Both teams made that tournament back in the day, but were knocked out in the groups (Romania had 1 point, Ukraine 0). 🇧🇪 BELGIUM vs. SLOVAKIA 🇸🇰 (GROUP E - 18.00, FRANKFURT): - Belgium finished undefeated in their qualifying group, finishing first with a 6-2-0 record and a +18 goal difference (22-4). They are heavily favoured to win this group, but it starts against a Slovak team that finished 7-1-2 in their qualifying group with a +9 goal difference (17-8), only behind a star-studded Portuguese side. - Belgium and Slovakia have not played each other in a match since 2013 - as a matter of fact, all three of their matches in history are international friendlies. Belgium are 2-1-0 against the Slovaks all-time (1-1, 1-1, 2-1). 🇦🇹 AUSTRIA vs. FRANCE 🇫🇷 (GROUP D - 21.00, DÜSSELDORF): - Austria placed second in their qualifying group, impressively going 6-1-1 in their eight matches and then following up with the fastest-scored goal in international history at just six seconds in a friendly against Slovakia. Ralf Rangnick's side has been impressive throughout the last year, but this will be their toughest test as they take on France, who have made two World Cup Finals in the last six years. France went an unbeaten 7-1-0 in their qualifying group, even defeating the second-best team in the Netherlands by a 4-0 score in one match. - Austria and France have faced each other twice in the last two years, in the UEFA Nations League; the match in Vienna ended in a 1-1 draw, but France won the reverse by a 2-0 score. Looking forward to another exciting day of football from Germany! #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #germany #romania #românia #ukraine #україна #belgium #belgië #belgique #belgien #slovakia #slovensko #austria #österreich #france

It is another draw at UEFA EURO 2024, the second in one day, as England 🏴 and Denmark 🇩🇰 finish their match in a one to one draw, the exact same score as it was after 90 minutes in their UEFA EURO 2020 semifinal. Harry Kane scored in that semifinal match, and he would score against the Danes at a European Championship again - this one on seventeen minutes through an excellent pass from Kyle Walker, that bounced off Andreas Christensen's legs before landing straight to the Bayern München forward. Morten Hjulmand then scored what is surely one of the best goals of the tournament with a blast from long range that went off the left post and in; Denmark played very well, outshooting England 16-12, 7-4 on target with 51 % possession, but they could not find a winning shot and neither could their opposition as the two gain one point each from this result. That said, Denmark are now competing with Slovenia and Serbia for the second direct spot in the round of sixteen, as England may have done enough to qualify for the knockouts with four points; the Danes were in a similar situation in 2021 at the last European Championship, finishing above Finland and Russia by defeating the Russians 4-1 in Copenhagen while Finland struggled against the Belgians, one of the best teams in Europe, in an 0-2 defeat. The Danes currently have the advantage as they sit in second place, with the tiebreaker currently being disciplinary points; they will play Serbia in Munich on Tuesday at 21.00 (CEST), while England faces Slovenia in Cologne at the same time. #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #denmark #danmark #england

Here is the schedule for Day 3 of UEFA EURO 2024 (Sunday, 16. June): 🇵🇱 POLAND vs. NETHERLANDS 🇳🇱 (GROUP D - 15.00, HAMBURG): - Poland, who uniquely qualified for the European Championship by winning on penalties against Wales in a playoff without having taken a single shot on target through 120 minutes, take on the Netherlands, who finished second in their qualifying group with a 6-0-2 record. Those two losses came to France, one of the two other teams they will face in the group at this tournament (Austria is the other one). - Poland and the Netherlands have faced off in four matches in both of the two most recent Nations League campaigns; the Dutch went 3-1-0 (1-0, 2-1, 2-2, 2-0). 🇸🇮 SLOVENIA vs. DENMARK 🇩🇰 (GROUP C - 18.00, STUTTGART): - Speaking of teams that faced each other in their qualifying group, Slovenia and Denmark have been drawn into the same European Championship group and will face each other in Stuttgart in their opening matches on Sunday. The two teams drew 1-1 in Slovenia in June but Denmark were victorious at home by a 2-1 score just five months later. - Despite doubts early on, Denmark had strong September, October, and November campaigns, and last year's EURO semifinalists finished with a 7-1-2 record, top of the group; Slovenia finished second, with a 7-1-2 record as well but with head-to-head the tiebreaker, Denmark won first even though Slovenia had a better goal differential (+11 to +9). Finland and Kazakhstan also had winning records of 6-0-4 from that close group, but would both exit in the first round of playoffs to Wales and Greece, respectively. 🇷🇸 SERBIA vs. ENGLAND 🏴 (GROUP C - 21.00, GELSENKIRCHEN): - Serbia, who finished second in their qualifying group with a 4-2-2 record (only behind Hungary), take on last year's European finalists (and a heavily favoured team to win this tournament) in England, who topped their qualifying group with an undefeated 6-2-0 record, a group that included the likes of Italy, Ukraine, and North Macedonia, as well as Malta. - Interestingly enough, this will be the first time that England faces Serbia as an independent nation; England last played against Serbia and Montenegro back in 2003, winning 2-1. That said, there are no prior results in this generation of Serbian football that can give an outlook of how this match could end up - Serbia are underdogs, but they may be able to win considering they have defeated, or come close to, teams of England's calibre in the last two years. Should be an exciting day of action in this tournament! #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #germany #poland #polska #netherlands #holland #nederland #slovenia #slovenija #denmark #danmark #serbia #srbija #србија #england

Day 10 of the UEFA EURO 2024 tournament, the first decision day from the group stages, is Sunday, 23. June. Group A is first up, and here are the two matches taking place at the same time, 21.00 (CEST). 🇨🇭 SWITZERLAND vs. GERMANY 🇩🇪 (GROUP A - 21.00, FRANKFURT): - Switzerland are currently on four points, 1-1-0 with the victory coming against Hungary by a 3-1 score and the draw being against Scotland 1-1. They simply need a draw to confirm knockout stage qualification in a top two spot, regardless of what happens in the match between Scotland and Hungary. A win is the only possible scenario where they win the group over Germany (as they would have 7 points and Germany 6), as a draw or German win means that the hosts will be going to Dortmund and not Berlin for their last sixteen matchup. Germany are 2-0-0 at this tournament, with a goal difference of +6 following a 5-1 win over Scotland and a 2-0 win over Hungary. - Germany and Switzerland last played each other in a UEFA Nations League group in 2020; the match in Switzerland was a 1-1 draw, the reverse in Germany ending 3-3. This was in the final year of Joachim Löw's term as German coach - since then, Hans-Dieter Flick and Julian Nagelsmann have been in the role, each with their own different tactics. 🏴 SCOTLAND vs. HUNGARY 🇭🇺 (GROUP A - 21.00, STUTTGART): - The other match of the day is in Stuttgart, featuring Scotland, who are 0-1-1 in the group with a -4 goal difference after a 1-5 defeat to Germany and a 1-1 draw with the Swiss; they take on Hungary, who are one point behind the Scots at 0-0-2, following two defeats by two goals each, 1-3 against Hungary and 0-2 against Germany. A Scottish win means likely knockout qualification in third place, as goal difference would go Switzerland's way should they lose to Germany by less than four. Hungary can finish third in the group at best, as a win means they finish on three points with goal difference being involved in the ranking - their knockout qualification is not certain regardless of a win. Both teams would be certainly eliminated in the case of a draw. - Scotland and Hungary have not faced each other since 2018, a 1-0 Scottish win in Budapest in a friendly; the prior match between the two was played in 2004, and all of them have been international friendlies; this is the first time they will take part in competition. Looking forward to what these matches will bring and how Group A will finish. Best of luck to all four teams taking part! #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #switzerland #schweiz #suisse #svizzera #svizra #germany #deutschland #scotland #hungary #magyarország

The third in Group E or F (Slovakia, Czech Republic or Turkey), the one with the best chance of being Spain’s rival in the round of 16 next Sunday | Euro Cup Germany 2024 Spain has qualified for the round of 16 of the Euro Cup as first in Group B after winning its three games against Croatia, Italy and Albania and not conceding a goal. And he will face the first life or death duel next Sunday the 30th at 9:00 p.m. (La1 and RTVE Play). The date, time and place are clear, but who will be La Roja’s rival in that first elimination match is not. The opponent of the Spanish team will come from one of the third places in Groups A, D, E and F. The national team will therefore have to wait for the group stage to conclude this Wednesday. Before the start of the day this Tuesday, when there are eight games still pending, there could be up to 11 different rivals. The uncertainty arises from the qualifying system for the round of 16 established by UEFA for this European Championship in Germany. The results of the group stage provide 12 direct places for the round of 16. The two best in each group (Spain or Germany are already among them) advance to the round of 16 of the competition. However, to complete the 16 best, the four best third parties from among the six groups that exist are also included. Despite the unknowns that still remain to be resolved, some prior coordinates can be established when looking for Spain’s rival in the round of 16. According to a probability index established by EL PAÍS, Slovakia and Ukraine, with 32%, are the most likely rivals according to the newspaper’s data team’s prediction model. They are followed by Romania (15%) and Belgium (8%), all from group E. With fewer options there are teams from other groups, such as Turkey, Austria or Georgia. Taking into account a certain sporting logic in the development of groups E and F, Slovakia in Group E and the Czech Republic or Turkey in F would be the rivals with the best chance of facing Spain. But that is only following a logic that sometimes does not occur. For example, there would be a chance that Belgium, a powerhouse, will be Spain’s opponent in the round of 16 if it does not defeat Ukraine in its final group match. If Belgium falls to third place and the combination occurs, De la Fuente’s men would face a tougher duel in the round of 16 of the competition. The Belgian team has more estimable potential with players like De Bruyne, Lukaku or Doku. There are also other options that would cause Spain to face the third in Groups A or D. The third in Group D (Netherlands, France or Austria) would only have a 13% chance of facing Spain, while the third in Group A, which is Hungary, would have a 20% chance of being the opponent of the Spanish team. There are many options, therefore, in terms of the rivals that Spain may have in the next phase. In short, Spain will always face a third party and, if it manages to advance to the quarterfinals, the mos...

(image credits to UEFA / YLE TV2) These were the kinds of moments that defined the match between Finland and Greece, ultimately ending in a disastrous 0-3 defeat that saw not a single shot on target. Ivan Jovanović made quick, tiki-taka style shortpassing Greece's strategy in this match, and although Finland was able to manage it well in the first ten minutes, everything seemed to fall apart afterward, but this sequence was probably the most evident moment of such failures; forty-eighth minute, Fotis Ioannidis has the ball in the Finnish end and aims to pass towards Anastasios Bakasetas. All of the four players in range of Ioannidis and Bakasetas (Robin Lod, Matti Peltola, Glen Kamara, Robert Ivanov) are staring at Ioannidis but none of them (Peltola is the closest) runs in to try and intercept the ball from Bakasetas. At the time of the first image, Bakasetas had already noticed Giannis Konstantinelias, who had just entered the field for Chatzigiovannis, on the left side, completely wide open, and Bakasetas immediately flicks the ball perfectly in Konstantinelias' direction. On the right side of the field, away from this image, Dimitrios Pelkas is also left open, creating a 2v1 opportunity for the Greeks. This was not only the highlight of Finland's weakness to short passes but also the fact that Ivan Jovanović's side had multiple times to create from the left side and took advantage almost every time, more prevalent in the first half but still there in the second; Finland focused so much on the central areas and the right side to some extent, that they completely disregarded the left side altogether and Greece ran with that. England will probably play the same way against Finland because they are a team capable of such, but they also attack primarily from the right side of the field - Finland need to change so much, but they only have three days and if they are conceding three or four against Wales and Greece, while making the routine back pass mishap twice in four matches, right now we can only wonder how this team will perform against England both now and at the Olympiastadion in October. I will be doing a liveblog on Tuesday for that match, going deeper into the tactics of both Finland and England - that one starts at 21.30 EEST and will be on X, @kettu0_. The liveblog from yesterday's Greece - Finland match can also be found there. #football #soccer #jalkapallo #huuhkajat #uefa #nationsleague #uefanationsleague #unl #finland #suomi #GREFIN
