San Diego Associates at boutique law firms, here's a snapshot of the job market trends over the last year, Sept. 2023 - Sept 2024: In Litigation, there were 41 new hires, while PI and Immigration saw 20 and 16 lateral moves, respectively. Firm growth by practice area also paints a positive picture. Litigation firms grew by 17%, PI firms by 19%, and estate planning and family law firms by 28%. Employment law firms remained steady at 15% growth. On average, firms with a net positive headcount change grew by 18% across all practice areas. I believe that headcount growth is one of the better statistics that give you insight of job market conditions. Stay tuned for more market stats in the coming weeks. I was chatting with Jenny Swan Meyer earlier and reminiscing about the heady days of 2021, when all the power was with law firm associates: law firms responded quickly, and often positively, to submissions; associates could make varied requests in offer negotiations; and firms were offering six-figure signing bonuses. Periods like that don't come along often, and we haven't seen the legal market look like that in the last few years. Firms are always hiring, and recently, we've seen even better numbers in places like Firm Prospects, LLC and had even better responses to our candidates. I always tell associates that no one can tell the future, but I'm going to go out on a limb now and say I think law firm hiring, across most practices, will increase over the rest of this year. The law firm hiring trends in Q2 have remained consistent with what we've seen over the past year. Litigators continue to be the most in-demand practitioners. Firms in California added 514 litigators to their teams in April and May: 364 associates, 80 counsels, and 70 partners. L&E remained strong too and California firms added 137 L&E lawyers: 86 associates, 35 counsels, and 70 partners. Corporate is seeing a slight uptick, sliding into 3rd place over the same span. California firms added 78 corporate attorneys: 49 associates, 8 counsels, and 21 partners. IP remains consistent with firms adding 78 lawyers: 20 associates, 9 counsels, and 14 partners. Real Estate practices added 26 years: 14 associates, 8 counsels, and 4 partners. See the chart below for a more in-depth breakdown by practice group.
