🎓 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 Academic freedom is increasingly under threat in Europe and around the world. To safeguard this essential right, a robust and multi-faceted legal framework is crucial. Human rights legislation at both the European and international levels provides a diverse set of principles that intersect with the various aspects of academic freedom. This intersection is vital for developing a comprehensive approach to understanding and defending academic freedom against potential threats. The League of European Research Universities (LERU) published an insightful paper in April 2023 that explores the main dimensions and scope of academic freedom. The paper emphasizes academic freedom as a fundamental right that must be enforced and protected. At FreeAC, we are committed to advancing the protection of academic freedom through collaborative research and advocacy. By working together, we can ensure that academic institutions remain bastions of independent thought and innovation. 👉 Read more about the challenges to academic freedom and how we can address them in this important study by LERU: https://lnkd.in/dX5v88fV #FreeAc_project #ErasmusPlus #EU_projects #highereducation #Ukraine #braingain #academicfreedom #supportUkraine #crossbordercollaboration #highereducationinstitutions

Last Thursday, we wrapped up a highly successful Global Classroom/Student Conference in Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. Over 50 participants from 37 countries, most of them students, gathered for a 4-day marathon to discuss the challenging topic of transitional justice, its tools, and challenges in relation to old, frozen, or new conflicts. It would be impossible to mention all the case studies presented, which ranged from the role of political dynasties in Southeast Asia, to how authoritarian regimes misuse constitutions and democratic frameworks in Latin America, to the main factors explaining the failure of democracy in Afghanistan. Discussions included the challenge of establishing official truths during reconciliation processes, the crucial role of civil society in promoting justice for minorities, the consequences when transition to democracy occur without justice, the impact of weaponised memories of past conflicts on transition, and how participatory filmmaking can contribute to transitional justice. The 2024 Global Classroom cohorts discovered that their countries face similar problems, albeit in different contexts. They expressed how interconnected they felt and how solidarity can be an answer to the tough job of a human rights defender. We are so proud of them! Many thanks to the OSCE Academy in Bishkek for their impeccable curation and to the European Commission (DG INTPA) for making this meaningful encounter possible. #transitology #democratisation #humanrights #humanrightseducation #justice #encounters Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria Arab Master in Democracy and Human Rights Mahidol University European Regional MA Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe (ERMA) Campus Global para América Latina y el Caribe Global Campus Alumni (GCA) https://lnkd.in/dy2kSEB9

Urgent Call to Action It has been brought to our attention that Nigerian international students at Teesside University are facing an alarming crisis as the institution initiates mass withdrawals, severely impacting their well-being and academic journeys. This is a critical moment that demands our immediate attention and collaborative action. The abrupt withdrawal of these students not only disrupts their education but also raises concerns about fairness, equity, and institutional support for international students. As advocates for global education and diversity, we must rally together to address this issue head-on. We urge Teesside University to reconsider its decision and work with affected students to find alternative solutions that prioritise their academic success and holistic well-being. Let's stand in solidarity with our Nigerian peers and demonstrate our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their nationality or background. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to our academic community. Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa

Please see this fascinating speech recently delivered by Professor Olubayi Olubayi. In 2012, I founded Maarifa Education and eventually convinced Prof to join the executive team. We spent many years trying to reinvent education in Africa, something that he had been very focused on when I first met him, and continues to devote his life to. Maarifa’s Mission was to provide quality higher education to as many Africans as possible. It was and remains a very difficult journey on so many levels and for so many reasons. Prof’s speech can make you think about, and potentially rethink, a lot of things. You might also vehemently disagree with his ideas. But for me he is spot on. And his powerful thoughts around mathematics education (unfortunately) kind of sum up the state of African education today (minute 38). In hindsight, I may have had the completely wrong idea. Survival of the fittest is a very real notion among all living things and while it’s nice to try to save the world, and everyone in it, at the end of the day, we have to build on foundations that allow the best and the brightest to succeed wildly. Only then can the rest of humanity build on top of those foundations. Again, not an easy argument to make, and also a highly debateable notion, but I have tried alternative approaches and for the most part have not liked the outcomes. Anyway, the speech is well worth your time if you are interested in, and/or curious about, these topics, no matter where you might philosophically fall on these issues. (Jump to minute five to start)
