As the Olympic Games are being held this year in Paris, I thought it would be interesting to explore how the Olympians earn their chance at gold, silver, or bronze. It turns out that, just like in the world of finance, the path to the Olympics is paved with strategic planning, diligent effort, and a fair bit of competitive spirit. Paris 2024 Olympic Games Paris 2024 will be held from 26 July to 11 August of this year and will include Aquatics, Athletics, and Boxing. New categories like breaking (as in break-dancing, I kid you not) will grace the games, as over 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries compete in 306 medal events. The Right Stuff? When it comes to qualifying, each sport has a different metric by which they judge. Some are based on individual performances, others on the collective strength of national teams. Sports like shooting and taekwondo offer quotas for places earned by individual athletes, which helps prevent a small number of countries from dominating any event. However, even then, the final say on who fills those quota places lies with the athlete's respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Dream Teams In team sports, nations secure their spots through performances in World Championships, continental competitions, or global qualifiers. This rigorous selection process ensures only the highest-performing athletes represent their countries on the international stage, making each event a (hopefully) thrilling spectacle of skill and sportsmanship. Talk about inspiring! The dedication, coordination, and grit needed to arrive at this global stage is just "awesome" in every sense. Olympics.com, 2024

Fencing is a completely individual sport. When you step onto the piste, it's all you against your opponent. At times, the match could be over in 5 minutes. But these 5 minutes could seem the longest for some fencers. All the training, all the pressure, all the expectations - they disappear in the 5 minutes. It's you against your opponent. What postive self-talk do elite fencers employ? What attentional focus strategies do champions use to focus their attention on their next move? #psychologicalskills #sportpsychology #GTsnippets

The data must be known to NBCUniversal. If you watch the NBC coverage, Jordan Chiles' score posts at the 3:28 mark in this video. And the NBC commentator states at the 4:01 mark that an inquiry had been put in on Jordan Chiles' floor routine. For the inquiry to be made and for NBC to know about it means that the time between the scores posting and the inquiry could not have been more than 30 seconds. But we don't know whether this video was edited. Honestly International Olympic Committee – IOC this is a judging error no matter how you slice it. The judges admit they erred on her difficulty score (5.9 instead of 5.8). Now the judges say they erred in allowing a (4 seconds?!) late challenge (which may not have been late). Just give out two Bronze medals FFS. Boxing, judo, taekwondo and wrestling award two bronze medals per competition. Where's the harm in awarding 2 when the judges screw up? And what's with the arbitrary 60 second limit for a challenge anyway? The actual limit is "before the next routine", but Chiles was last so there was no next routine! Does it take into account the time to walk to the judges? Is that miraculously the same at every competition? Should they be sprinting to the judges pushing everyone out of their way? Does it take into account the time it takes a judge to look up from what they are doing? Is it when the coach makes the verbal inquiry or when the judge records the inquiry? It is when the coach begins speaking or when she ends her inquiry. Does it account for language differences between the coach making the inquiry and the judge receiving it? What if the coach is in a wheelchair?! It's just so ridiculous to put that kind of precision on something that cannot possibly be so precise. Mind you, isn't 13.666 versus 13.700 rather over-precision on something subjectively judged in the first place? After all, because all scoring is to only one decimal place in the first place (see my next post) an average of 13.666 should be reported as 13.7 tying the two for Bronze. #olympics #gymnastics #bronzemedal #jordanchiles #data #error #judging
