This impactful bus tour features 3 key stops in the learning journey of our local Black history in and around Simcoe County. We begin in Barrie at 9:30 am and travel to the Oro African Church, a restored historical site. A local family descendant will provide an engaging history of the Black settlers who made a home in the surrounding area, but the church brought the community together. The bus tour takes us over to the outskirts of Collingwood to the Sheffield Park Black History & Cultural Museum, where we will meet another family descendant and tour the many small buildings containing artifacts, memorabilia and recreations of the Black settler's early days in the area. A culturally inspired lunch will be served, and a chance to wander the grounds at your own pace. We then return to Barrie but have a short stop at the Bethel Union Cemetery, the first multi-cultural cemetery in Simcoe County. Here lies a beautiful monument to the many Black settlers and slaves who lived and worked in the area. The tour will take us back to Barrie, where we started at approximately 4 pm. There will be toilet facilities at each location and food and water. The Bus Tour travels rain or shine, so please dress for the weather and for walking on uneven ground. The National Park Service (NPS), in partnership with NCPH, is embarking on a project to identify and prioritize historical research needs related to Black History at its parks in the Intermountain West (all NPS sites in the states of Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming), to better preserve and interpret resources related to this history. As part of this project, we are asking for feedback from historians, NPS staff, volunteers, and anyone else familiar with this history, via the survey linked to below. Your responses will help the NPS determine how to prioritize future historical research funding to better understand and interpret Black history in the Intermountain West. https://lnkd.in/gfdPjK-A. This survey is optional and should take 5–10 minutes. We appreciate your participation if you are able to do so. If you have any questions about the survey, or if you would like to provide feedback in a different format, please email the historian managing this project, Dr. Jackie Gonzales, at jgonzales@mirandolaresearch.com.

Honoring the resilience and strength of those who came before us. Happy Juneteenth! Let us remember, reflect, and continue the journey towards true freedom and equality for all. We are also still in a struggle to protect our freedoms; therefore, we must continue to advocate for the rights of our people and marginalized voices. This Juneteenth, we encourage you and your family to use your voice and actions for good. Here are a few ideas: 1. Support a Black-owned business. 2. Host or participate in a Juneteenth event. 3. Visit a museum chronicling African American history and culture. 4. Celebrate Juneteenth and Black culture through food, music, clothing, literature, and art. 5. Do artwork or crafts with your children honoring African American heritage. 6. Watch an educational program about Juneteenth with your family. 7. Support www.fearless.fund.
