For over a decade, my marketing and branding journey was shaped mostly by the insights of industry's leading men who are more visible online. But today, I stumbled upon something eye-opening—a list by Tequia Burt featuring incredible Black women in marketing mostly in the USA. Black professionals in US represent just 7.2% of marketers and 5.2% of CMOs. I suppose we can expect the same trend elsewhere. This is a wake-up call for all of us to weave diversity into our core strategies to enrich the marketing world with inclusivity and innovation. 💡 “The burden shouldn’t be on Black women to adapt, but on institutions to change.” In their latest report, Runnymede Trust highlights the experiences of Black women in leadership across various sectors, revealing how they navigate double standards, unfair pressures, and institutional gaslighting at the highest levels of their careers. 🗣️💔 Despite the toll these challenges take on their well-being, leaders share the powerful strategies they’ve used to persevere and thrive. Black women are grossly underrepresented in leadership roles in corporate America and are consistently overlooked when filling positions of authority. Black women comprise less than 1.5% of senior and executive leadership roles in the top Fortune 500 companies. Once the rare Black woman secures a leadership role, she is often the only Black female in the room leaving her feeling hyper-visible; but at the same time, “socially invisible”. In other words, their underrepresentation makes Black women highly visible in their workplace; and yet they report greater isolation and difficulty being perceived as credible; having very limited power, authority, control, access to resources, and fewer opportunities for senior management sponsorship. This is #theinvisibleelephant phenomenon, being hyper-visible and ignored as if invisible, simultaneously. I am here to encourage Black women project managers and leaders and let you know that you are not alone; you are not invisible. Sometimes just knowing you are not alone in your situation can help you to persevere. Let’s support and encourage each other. As a Black businesswoman owning a financial advising firm, I am thrilled to witness a significant moment in history with President Joe Biden endorsing Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee. This endorsement is more than just a political move; it is a powerful statement about women's empowerment and the potential for Black women entrepreneurs to break barriers and achieve greatness. Kamala Harris's journey to this point is a testament to the resilience, intelligence, and leadership that women, particularly Black women, bring to the table. Her nomination symbolizes a breaking of the glass ceiling and serves as an inspiration for all women striving to make their mark in their respective fields. 👏Seeing a woman of color in such a prominent position reinforces the belief that we can overcome these hurdles and excel. 👏Empowerment begins with representation. Black women in personal assistance are breaking barriers and redefining excellence through their dedication, resilience, and innovative approaches to client management. However, it is crucial to recognize the vital role played by supportive networks that foster growth, provide resources, and champion equality within this industry. From professional organizations like the Executive Leadership Council (ELC), which offer networking opportunities, career development programs, and leadership training, to informal groups such as mentorship circles and online communities, these platforms serve as beacons of hope and inspiration for aspiring black female PAs. Moreover, the importance of family, friends, and colleagues cannot be overstated. These individuals often act as soundboards, offering emotional support, constructive feedback, and valuable insights into navigating challenges unique to black women in the workplace. Let us pay tribute to the pioneers who broke through barriers and created opportunities for later generations, such as Mary Winston Jackson, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and countless others. Recognizing the value of cooperation, connection, and respect for one another, we can build an inclusive atmosphere where everyone's opinions are respected, heard, and celebrated. 6th March 2023 I walked the TEDx stage and revealed my years of research around the unfortunate case that black women often face challenges when it comes to feeling a sense of belonging in the workplace. ➡Research has shown that black women often face unique barriers and biases that can make it difficult for them to feel fully included and valued at work. ➡Some of the challenges that black women may face in the workplace include microaggressions, stereotyping, discrimination, and a lack of representation at senior levels. These factors can make it difficult for black women to build relationships with colleagues, feel like they have a voice, and advance in their careers. ➡To address this issue, organizations can take steps to create more inclusive workplaces that value diversity and prioritize equity. This can include implementing policies and practices that support diversity and inclusion, providing inclusive leadership training to employees, and actively working to increase the representation of black women and other underrepresented groups in leadership positions. ➡In addition, it is also important for individuals to take steps to create a sense of belonging for black women in the workplace by actively listening to their perspectives, advocating for their inclusion, and working to build genuine relationships with them. By taking these steps, we can work together to create workplaces where all individuals, including black women, feel a sense of belonging and are able to thrive. See, it is SIMPLE! It's STILL Black History Month! 🔴⚫🟢 But we continue to sideline Black women 🤷🏾♀️executives in these 3 industries: Our journey towards diversity in executive leadership still has a long way to go. The absence of Black women in executive positions across 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵💻, 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲🏦, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲🏥 isn't just a missed opportunity for equality—it's a direct hit to innovation, equity, and progress. In 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 💻 the sector thrives on innovation, yet how can we claim to drive the future forward when our leadership lacks diverse perspectives? Black women bring invaluable insights that could steer technological advancements to cater to a broader and increasingly diverse audience, yet their absence in executive roles leaves a gap in our innovation narrative. The 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧💰, the backbone of our economy, also mirrors this disparity. The scarcity of Black women in roles such as CEOs and CFOs raises questions about our commitment to inclusivity and equity in spaces where economic decisions are made for 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲👩🏾⚕️ a critical component of our society, especially in times of global crises, is no stranger to this gap. With Black women missing from leadership roles, are we really equipped to address health disparities and inequities? Their leadership could pave the way for more inclusive health policies and practices again - for 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘! 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻? History and results tell us that's absolutely not the case. This isn't just about filling seats. It's about enriching our industries with diverse voices to foster true innovation, equity, and progress. Let's ignite a conversation around this.
