It's always interesting to lead the Modules category of pv magazine Global's annual awards. Reviewing the 50+ entries in the category provides me with an unparalleled overview of the latest in cutting edge of solar cell and module technology. And then evaluating the finalists with our expert jury, I am fortunate enough to get insights into not only the technologies themselves, but also their cost competitiveness, and market impact. It seems fitting that this year's winner is a leader in back-contact, AIKO Energy. While the technology is mature and has been present in the market for two decades, the results that Aiko has achieved in terms of performance and cost competitiveness is remarkable. With a module efficiency of 25%, power output ranging between 655 to 680 Wp in rooftop formats, the third generation of Aiko's back-contact modules genuinely stands out. There are reasons to believe that the next few years will be dominated by back-contact technology, with Aiko at the vanguard. Thanks to jurors Amy Sih-Chun Fang, Molly Morgan and George Touloupas.
