The BMCC recently attended a Dialogue Session with Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) to discuss the National Budget 2025, themed 'Ekonomi Madani Memperkasa Rakyat,' and focused on enhancing Malaysia's global competitiveness and inclusivity. The session focused on two primary agendas. The first was on 'raising the ceiling', which involved positioning Malaysia as a prime investment destination by leveraging its strengths primarily focusing on Islamic financing and investments. This strategic move aims to attract a diverse range of investors and enhance the nation's global standing. The agenda of 'raising the floor' centred on promoting inclusivity and equitable opportunities for all citizens. This includes ensuring access to healthcare, education, and social security, fostering a spirit of unity, and maintaining good governance. These efforts are essential in creating a stable and prosperous environment. In support of these goals, the BMCC provided policy input, which was submitted to MITI for consideration in the National Budget. The policy recommendations align with the goals of BMCC members across various committees and networks, particularly focusing on improving market access and developing local talents.

Alhamdolillah, our paper entitled "Does employee treatment affect trade credit? An international evidence" is published in Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting (SCOPUS Q1/SSCI IF 3.5/ABDC 'C'). Many thanks to coauthors Ali Al-maqarih, HAMDI BEN-NASR and Lotfi Karoui, PhD, MBA, BBA. In this paper, we investigate the linkage of employee treatment and trade credit (from a receivable perspective) for a large sample of 45 countries. Key takeaways are that 1) to boost trade credit, the firms need to materialize fair employee treatment and 2) firms from labor-intensive firms and highly competitive industries need to care more about employee treatment which promotes trade credit. https://lnkd.in/e96VrCtT

"Capital Market in Malaysia | Past, Present & Future by Securities Commission Malaysia with a Foreword from the Prime Minister of Malaysia." The book is intended to mark the 30th anniversary of the commission and aims to showcase Malaysia's thought leadership in the capital market from a broad and profound perspective involving regulators, capital market players, and scholars. It includes the history of the SC and the capital market, narrated by past SC leaders who have helped formulate policy direction since the SC's inception in 1993. In short, it's a compendium of wisdom and knowledge, especially from past Chairmen who played a crucial role in shaping and driving the organization forward. One of the notable past Chairmen is Datuk Ali Abdul Kadir, the second Chairman of Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), credited with cleaning up the capital markets after the beating they took from the Asian Financial Crisis. In 1999, he was Chairman of Ernst & Young when he was tapped for this job. Despite having a lucrative income as a practicing professional accountant, he was asked to set that aside and accept a significant drop in salary, which wouldn't even cover his previous year's tax bills, as 'national duty.' Naturally, this was a major hurdle. We take pride and consider ourselves fortunate to have a personal acquaintance with him. Drawing from his wisdom, we continue to learn, and he serves as our guide in his current role as the Advisor and Chairman of Medika Natura Sdn Bhd on our journey to becoming a global biopharma company. CREATE MORE Act ✅ While we will still propose a risk-based audit, the creation of the RBE Taxpayer Service to focus on the compliance of all Registered Business Enterorises or those availing tax incentives both foreign and domestic companies so they will no longer be submit to annual or random audit which results to unnecessary costs for them ✅ While we still believe the tax refund center must be separate from BIR and BOC, the creation of a VAT Refund Center to implement an electronic refund system will hopefully address the complaints of foreign investors and locators for the undue delay of VAT refunds ✅ Pursuant to EODB Act, processing of application for incentives will not exceed 20 working days provided documentary requirements are complete

We organised an early Christmas lunch for the pro-tempore committee members Seow Kee Gan, Chin Hwee TAN (SGTraDex), So Cheer Kwek (PwC), Teo Wee Kiang of the Centre for the Future of Trade and Investment (CFOTI) of the Singapore Business Federation to give thanks to their stewardship over the past year. We dearly missed Prof Annie Koh, PhD who was away in Bangkok. We were joined by partners from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore) - Deputy Secretary (Trade) Jane Lim, Director-General (Trade) Ng Bee Kim, Principal Trade Specialist Elizabeth Chelliah and Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) Managing Director Jacqueline Poh. It was a good catch-up as we exchanged views on the evolving trade policies, investment opportunities, and the impact of global economic trends on Singapore and the regional economy. The need for CFOTI has never been more urgent with increased protectionism and weakening of the multilateral trading system. Launched in July at the Future of Trade Forum (FOTF), CFOTI will be a regional COE to build capability among Singapore and regional businesses to engage in and maximise the benefits of global cross-border trade and investment. It will develop the capacity of the private sector to engage in advocacy and thought leadership and grow a vibrant community of next-generation trade leaders to co-create future-ready solutions. Work is now underway to launch a competency framework and related courses that are industry-validated and practice-oriented. The framework will identify the relevant skills and provide a pathway for practitioners to acquire the necessary training to navigate the increasingly complex regulations and ever-changing trade and industrial policy landscape.
