Did you know that whenever you ask a user, "Are you sure you want to x?" An angel loses its wings? Okay, maybe that's different from what really happens, but you are causing your users uncertainty and doubt in their decision-making. Chances are, the user won't make the right decision and may inadvertently lose something because the dialog message was unclear. So, how can you prevent this? Instead, tell the user what's supposed to happen. If it's a delete dialog, you could use the following formula: Delete file? This will permanently delete your file. Cancel Delete file The question and the actions match. The user has clear instructions on how to take appropriate action. They were given the critical information: if they delete their file, it will be permanently deleted, and then they are given a clear call to action to either cancel the request or delete the file, and an angel gets to keep their wings!
