Challenge of the week:
This week, we completed a Safety Improvement Project where a dangerous lip was eliminated along with some uneven concrete from severe cracking. The holiday weekend allowed the contractor to get the work done without impacting production which was fantastic!
I went over to review the progress and it looked great. I was about to leave and he asked if I could meet him tomorrow to cut in stress lines or it would just happen again. This wise request brought a couple of things to mind:
First, leave everything better than you found it. That may be picking up a piece of paper when no one is looking, listening to someone about their concerns, improving a frustrating process, or fixing a concrete driveway.
Secondly, the "C" of the DMAIC process. Without the cut lines, stress will crack the new concrete and revert to the old condition. What do we put in place to maintain the advantage created? Is it a Standard Work, a checksheet, a PM, or training? Be sure to put something in place, it will atrophy without the last step.
Celebrate success but don't forget to lock it in for the long term!
