Through my work as a maternity and parental coach I support parents before, during and after maternity, adoption and parental leave. Although every individual’s experience is personal and unique to them, there are definitely a variety of common themes that run through every single one.   "Did anyone warn you about the rollercoaster of parenthood? Because no one warned me!"  Five months into being a parent, and let me tell you—it’s a blessing wrapped in a whirlwind.  Sleepless nights, impromptu diaper-changing breaks in the middle of work, and the stark reality of limited paternity leave—it’s been an eye-opener. Through this journey, I’ve developed a whole new respect for dads everywhere. Balancing endless cries, deciphering baby needs, and diving straight into back-to-back meetings? It’s a juggling act that deserves a standing ovation.  Fatherhood is tough, humbling, and yes, absolutely rewarding. Today's post is an homage to all moms out there, let me tell you why: 🌸 Did you know? Motherhood transforms more than just your life—it changes your brain too! 🤯 As a mom, I was amazed to learn that a woman's brain undergoes significant changes during pregnancy and continues for up to 2 years after giving birth. Back in my corporate days, I didn't fully grasp the challenges returning mothers faced, in fact I expected them to hit the ground running on Day 1, and if they didn't it was categorised as lack of performance. SADLY, I wasn't alone to think that way. But now, I understand the importance of empathy and support for new parents.👩👧👦 Here is why: During pregnancy and postpartum, a woman's brain experiences shifts in the brain including grey matter, the prefrontal cortex, etc. These changes occur naturally to enhance empathy—the key to connecting with our little ones. 🧠💖 Understanding these physiological changes opened my eyes to the incredible power of motherhood. It's not just about making babies; it's about nurturing and adapting to this new chapter of life. 🌟 So I am using my platform today to share with you my own experience and here's what I want you to take away: 1️. Motherhood is a journey of growth and adaptation; EMBRACE IT. 2️. There's a fascinating science behind the power of motherhood - YOU ARE NOT ALONE. 3️. Let's be kinder and more supportive to new parents, both moms and dads! 4️. Corporations need to educate themselves on parenthood's science and create REAL INCLUSIVE CULTURES that truly support working parents and EMPOWER WOMEN to come back to the workplace. In the last of my series of posts about the 10 most important questions to ask yourself before going on maternity leave – today I share the final 4️⃣ questions. 1️⃣ What are the financial implications of parenthood for my family as a unit? How do we want to balance the short- medium- and long-term impact? 2️⃣ Who will be the primary carer for my child/ children and what will the balance of caregiving be? How will I share parenting and home responsibilities, who with, and what conversations do I need to have to make this happen? 3️⃣ How would I feel about missing work on account of taking time off to look after my child? And vice versa? 4️⃣ What type of role model do I want to be for my child? So there you have it... 🔟 questions to consider and reflect on as you are on your journey to #motherhood. I’ve coached many women for who the reality of life as a #workingparent is often very different to the idyllic vision society sells us. Becoming a mother often strips women of their identity.
