Recently, doctors successfully put a pig's kidney into a 62-year-old man with end-stage kidney disease. This groundbreaking procedure occurred at Massachusetts General Hospital, marking a significant achievement that might be the start of a new way to address the critical shortage of human donor organs. More than 103,000 people are waiting for a new organ, and 17 of them die every day because they can't get one in time. The pandemic made it even harder for people to get transplants, so finding new ways to help is urgent. In the past, experimental transplants were reserved for dire cases under specific protocols and the recent achievements paved the way for larger-scale clinical trials. These types of trials are subject to scrutiny by the FDA. Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, who led the first pig-heart transplant in 2022, emphasized the importance of such trials in validating the viability of these procedures. This successful pig kidney transplant is a big step in solving the problem of insufficient organs for transplants. It is more than devastating to think that a diagnosis for #Endometriosis has become even more elusive in this day and age. It has been the inspiration of my career to develop improved testing so that we can limit the time from symptom appearance to the time of diagnosis to as little as 30 minutes with a 98 to 99+ percent accurate and completely non-invasive test. It is only with the introduction of reliable noninvasive cost effective testing with a high degree of accuracy that we will be able to even begin to develop medications to control and cure this horrible disease. With the #EndoSure test, that process is now well underway. With this test, as long as you have access to portable water, a place to recline for 30 minutes and the device and its program you can have a diagnosis no matter if you were in the middle of the desert, or in the deepest of jungles. "Many endometriosis patients are now facing a nearly 10-year wait for a diagnosis, with growing delays for sufferers, according to a recently-released study." A huge thank you to TVNZ for covering the release of our study with the University of Canterbury which has shown the average delay time for a diagnosis of endometriosis has increased to 9.7 years, up from 8.7 years in 2022 for New Zealand patients. Thank you to Dr Michael Wynn-Williams, chair of our Clinical Advisory Committee, Katherine Ellis our Research Project Coordinator who worked on this study, and Hannah Milson who is a member of our Endometriosis New Zealand community and bravely spoke of her experience with endometriosis and the 14-year delay she faced. Our article, titled "Complex Presentation of Uterus Didelphys With Bilateral Leiomyomas: A Case Report," highlights the importance of detailed diagnostic approaches and multidisciplinary management in addressing uncommon gynecological condition.
Excited to share that I'm a co-author of a recently published paper on pediatric hyperthyroidism titled "Neutropenia Occurs More Often Under Carbimazole than Under Methimazole Treatment in Pediatric Graves’ Disease Patients" in the journal Thyroid. Over the past two years, I've conducted statistical analysis on data collected retrospectively by several pediatric endocrinologists in Germany. We began with a small but complex dataset and no specific research question in mind, but I believe we've uncovered a significant finding: Currently, two drugs are commonly used to treat hyperthyroidism in children: Carbimazole and its metabolite, methimazole. Neutropenia, a reduction in a type of white blood cell, is a known side effect of these treatments. Out of the 161 children in our dataset, 38 developed severe neutropenia during treatment. Interestingly, neutropenia was significantly more prevalent in patients receiving carbimazole (50%; n = 20/40) compared to those on methimazole (16.5%; n = 18/110). This suggests a clear recommendation for methimazole in the treatment of pediatric hyperthyroidism. Throughout this project, I've gained valuable insights into handling messy data, as the original dataset wasn't initially intended for clinical analysis. Additionally, working with data concerning children with a serious illness has deepened my gratitude for my own health, both past and present. This study compares the progression of high myopia in children aged 6–13 treated with 0.01 % atropine versus no treatment. The study included 75 eyes with an initial spherical equivalent (SE) of ≤-6 D and astigmatism of <2 D. Over three years, atropine-treated eyes showed statistically significant slowing of SE progression. Findings suggest that low-dose #atropine may be beneficial as a first-line treatment for high #myopia but should be interpreted cautiously due to limited statistical power. I am pleased to report on my recent participation in the National Thrombosis Week 2024 Virtual Conference, hosted by Thrombosis UK. This timely conference offered a comprehensive exploration of Venous Thromboembolism (#VTE) diagnosis, contemporary management strategies, and emerging research avenues. Highlights included a session led by Prof. Beverley Hunt OBE, Dr. Matthew Fay, and Prof. Catherine Nelson-Piercy exploring the diagnostic challenges of VTE, particularly in non-pregnant and pregnant patients. Discussions delved into novel areas like Spontaneous VTE in Thrombocytopenia (Spontaneous VITT) and innovative models for anticoagulation and VTE care. Following a presentation on alternatives to #heparin, I had the opportunity to engage Dr. Will Lester in a focused #discussion on the potential implications of DNA #recombination techniques in this context. The conference further enriched my knowledge with engaging poster presentations and sessions exploring the use of Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) in diverse patient profiles, practical considerations through case studies, and groundbreaking new #research in VTE. The interactive nature of the virtual conference created a dynamic learning environment. P.S.
