At the end of January 2024, Tori-kizoku 鳥貴族Holdings announced that it would establish a subsidiary in Los Angeles, USA. They stated as the reason. Yakitori 焼き鳥(Japanese style skewered chicken) is starting to be recognized as a Japanese food in Los Angeles, and the company determined that there is a market where yakitori would be easily accepted. The company plans to open its first store in Los Angeles in the next 1 to 2 years. Yakitori is still less well known overseas than the Japanese cuisine of sushi and ramen. However, in recent years, it seems certain that yakitori has become more popular overseas, especially in the United States, due to the increasing popularity of yakitori among tourists visiting Japan. Recently, I have noticed many F&B outlets have closed; perhaps, cost of living, Food Delivery enabled stalls get those businesses, or in areas of less tourists, like Chinatown. * On the other hand, several Chinese-made Restaurant-chain have opened in Singapore and Luckin Coffee is getting very acceptable with growing popularity. While my understanding The Chinese have their own domestic challenges at home and probably touring with a tight budget in mind. I don't see this situation improving, especially the new US Presidential Administration is coming in by January 2025, many countries will have to deal with the tariff-wall building up and redirected of many products and services away from the US and Europe 🇪🇺 likely into ASEAN. As Food Delivery services become more available and effective, rather than efficient; good food can be cooked at cheaper places and made their way into homes, cost up as logistics "convenience", less taking for Dine-in Restaurant operators. Exciting to see the #SocialEnterprise ViaVia Traveller Café model continue to #scale! I visited the one in Leuven years ago and loved the atmosphere—it’s a special place. "Successfully Creating and Scaling a Sustainable Social Enterprise Model Under Uncertainty: The Case of ViaVia Travellers Cafés" by Kieran Dobson, PhD, was actually the very first academic research paper I read at the start of my Phd. A super interesting read, exploring how the social enterprise scaled, using an unproven business model, through social franchise and joint ownership models. Also looking at how the model can be flexible to suit the individual locations, but also learn from each iteration around what is critical - such as the importance of location ownership and securing tenure in ensuring sustainable growth. Great news: the newest addition to the ViaVia World family, ViaVia Bali Sanur, is now officially open! The opening ceremony with a traditional Hindu ritual took place in the beautiful Palm Garden Hotel in Sanur, Bali. ️ ViaVia coordinators Toon Teugels and Isabelle Claes, Joker CEO Stijn Elsen and Joker founder Jan Baeten were present. During their visit, they explored the cultural highlights and collaborated with local partners. They traveled on to Yogyakarta, where they visited one of the oldest (next year it will be 30 years old! ) ViaVia locations. Freshwater prawns aka udang galah are also known as Malaysian lobsters here. Though not air flown, they are getting quite rare here in Northern Malaysia. Frozen ones could cost RM50/kg onward, depending on size, and live ones could start from as low as RM120/kg onward, almost similar to the price of king white prawns now. Certain restaurants would also charge them as much as the price of mud crabs (RM80-RM150/kg)
