Eva Garland Consulting, LLC (EGC) is excited to announce that Nature Portfolio (Nature Biotechnology) has published our groundbreaking work on the first programmatic intervention that demonstrably increases participation by underrepresented groups in the The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. EGC’s leadership of the NIH Applicant Assistance Program (AAP), in collaboration with the @National Cancer Institute and 10 other NIH Institutes and Centers, has provided customized coaching in preparing SBIR applications to over 700 small businesses from across the entrepreneurial ecosystem. As presented in the Nature Biotechnology paper, the AAP has resulted in a two-fold increase in representation of women-owned small businesses (WOSBs) and socially and economically disadvantaged (SDBs) in the NIH SBIR program: the percentage of SBIR awardees from WOSBs who participated in the AAP was 37% compared to 15% of non-participants; similarly the percentage of SBIR awardees from SDBs who participated in the AAP was 34% vs.16% of non-participants. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 D𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦! We are happy to highlight the contributions of four of our students— Miguel Puga Sánchez, Jorge Cervera Pérez-Hervada, Aaron Nerella, and Cheng Wang— who are dedicating part of their extracurricular time to boosting the Danish biotechnological entrepreneurial landscape with their business insights and participating in the Nucleate Denmark program. Nucleate is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering the next generation of biotech leaders. They identify promising future bio-entrepreneurs engaged in impactful research and facilitate the establishment of new life science companies, offering an equity-free, cost-free, hands-on entrepreneurial experience. Our students are actively involved in the program as business advisors. They have been matched with specific new biotechnological startups and are now working closely with them to guide them on their entrepreneurial journey. The program's curriculum includes interdisciplinary team-building activities, and bi-weekly workshops conducted over a span of five months, and culminates in a final pitch presentation of the startup. 🌟 Miguel Puga Sánchez has played a key role in the establishment of Nucleate in Denmark, taking on the role of Communications Lead. Some of his many responsibilities are representing Nucleate at industry events, advocating for its mission, and promoting the activator's unique value proposition, which has greatly helped to kick off the program. 🌟 When asked about this experience, Aaron Nerella emphasized Nucleate’s appeal for its structured approach to learning about disruptive innovations in Denmark's startup scene, which he could put to the test by helping the new startup BioHalo develop a bio-alternative to PFAS. 🌟 Cheng Wang joined Nucleate to gain exposure to Danish pharma and venture capital, focusing on applying his business background to support Idun Biologics' commercialization efforts. 🌟Jorge Cervera Pérez-Hervada shared with us that his interest in early-stage startup development led him to Nucleate, where he found the program's comprehensive coverage and involvement with KPL, a venture producing enzymes for proteomics studies, particularly enriching. Venture-shaped hole in Dutch R&D supremacy. Had a chat with my best friend recently, who happens to work in a complex research field. We're bouncing off ideas as to where the "next big thing" is going to happen, and his shout was Netherlands. Why? - In 2021, Netherlands spent 2.1% of their whole budget on R&D, making them by far the largest spender in the field in Europe 💰 - Dutch UMCs (Uni Medical Centres) are across the best in the world, with the likes of Maastricht, Radboude, and Utrecht leading the way in IVF and biomed research across Europe 🧫 - Dutch universities more than doubled the student amount over the past decade - there are over 110 undergrads and postgrads in the country as of last year. 👨🎓 That's all nice, of course, but there are also several problems in the sector that slow down the inevitable growth - VC funding. The levels of funding are below those of country's neighbours, and reluctance to bet early and give chances to students and founders without PhDs and 15 years of academic experience does no good to the country as well. In 2023, Dutch VC deployed a total of $2.1B dollars, a 27% decrease from the year before, and approximately a third of the latest OpenAI round. We surely can do better. Supporting young and ambitious founders is the way to go for the Netherlands, and I hope it'd be a voice of reason, not topic of contention in the government and among local investments in the next 5-10 years. #researach #vc #venturecapital #startups #entrepreneurship #netherlands #dutch #biotech #medicine

ONE partnered with Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Development International and Sustainable Alpha to bring the investors to Aberdeen, curating a unique opportunity for innovation-driven businesses to pitch their research commercialisation. 🌍 Seven high-potential life sciences companies, working in fields including neurodegeneration, anti-infectives, obesity, hypertension and cancer showcased their groundbreaking work. 🌐 The investors included asset managers acting for high-net-worth individuals and family offices, institutions and VC interests, angel investors and serial tech entrepreneurs. 📍 Aberdeen is home to a distinctive life sciences cluster, developing novel research into solutions and launching them to market. ONE is building an entrepreneurial ecosystem for the sector. ONE BioHub offers space for growing businesses to innovate and commercialise their science out of the academic research environment with labs, offices, incubation and collaboration spaces, and custom grow-on space. It is where the cluster comes together and can access entrepreneurship programmes, mentoring, and expert networks. "Start with why". Today I decided to share why I have an undoubted commitment with technology transfer and entrepreneurship: With 21 years old my father was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in January of 2013. It felt like a natural progression to develop my master´s degree thesis in this particular area. I performed my thesis abroad and, fortunately, in my first day it was assigned to me a new research project for ALS. While working in this project, I was naive to think I could develop a therapeutic drug with market approval to be used by my father and other ALS patients to improve their quality of life. In the end of August of 2014 my father passed away. During this period I experienced being one of the caregivers of my father for almost 2 years, making the best efforts to give him the best quality of life. In 2022, while I was performing my certification in Technology Transfer in Barcelona, two amazing entrepreneurs showed an example where they created a spin-off company to develop a therapeutic product for ALS. They raised capital to conduct a clinical trial and at the time they engaged with the ALS patient´s association from Spain. The entrepreneurs were acknowledged by the association for contacting them and before they left gave them a sand timer engraved "Our time is in your hands"! To date, they still recall the pain of the association and the patients! As a scientist its our responsability to perform the technology transfer of valuable assets to relief the patients pains! For the last 10 years, I learned and developed a valuable skill set that allows me to understand the roadmap to the market for a therapeutic product. Yet, I cannot do this alone! Reme-D.Inc, committed to locally sourcing 95% of its materials, is pushing boundaries in affordable #healthcare. Now, with Fluorobiotech (PTY) Ltd's cost-effective enzyme production, they're set to further drive down testing costs, making healthcare even more accessible. It’s back! The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and The National Institutes of Health’s $100K annual competition “Start an SUD Startup” needs your ideas that may lead to biotech startups for Substance Use Disorders (SUD). This prize challenge has had continued success each year, and remains popular within communities by providing hope in discovering solutions to reduce misuse and overdose instances. NIDA believes this competition is unique as they intend to provide dedicated biomedical entrepreneurial assistance and prize money to the “would-be” startup founders much earlier than most investors, incubators, or traditional models of research funding (e.g., small business grants).
