Who, What, Where, When, Why (and sometimes how)! Whether you are writing for news, sports or even marketing pieces, the Five Ws & a “H” are absolute musts to be included in each story. These are the essential basics that give viewers and readers the proper context for a story. I’m surprised at how often I might see a story on a TV newscast that does not provide this critical info. For sports, it’s a great way to set the scene… “High School Basketball (what) tonight (when)…. Penn at Riley (who & where)…. 1st place in the NIC on the line (why)” And that’s also the case for news, “Happening now (when)… South Bend Fire (who) responding to a massive fire (what & why) at the corner of Colfax and Eddy Street (where). Fire officials do not know yet ‘how’ the fire started.” It’s important that this information comes immediately at the top of a story. Without it, viewers are left trying to answer the questions themselves and are not able to properly listen or absorb the details a reporter is then giving. Certainly in each story, you may not know the answer to each one of these. In those cases, it’s important to address that. Why: “Police have not released a potential motive yet.” Who: “It’s unclear at this time how many people will be affected.” -- Write your stories and double check you’ve answered these questions or explained why you are not able to. It will better help inform your viewers.
