🌍 As we approach the conclusion of #COP16, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment for global biodiversity since negotiations are stalled over critical financing issues, and the need for a decision has never been more urgent so we do not have to wait again another 2 years on empty promises. Countries in the Global South require substantial financial resources to implement essential measures for biodiversity preservation. Despite a commitment from developed nations to allocate $20 billion annually, as we near the end of this conference, those funds are still not reaching the communities that need them most. Without these resources, achieving the goal of protecting 30% of land and marine areas by 2030 is at serious risk. Protecting biodiversity is not just an environmental imperative; it's a matter of health and survival for all of us. The discussion surrounding a new biodiversity fund shouldn't focus solely on its creation but should instead shift to how we can swiftly and effectively provide financial resources to those communities on the front lines of conservation. Time is running out, and we must ask the right questions: 💸 How can we ensure rapid and direct access to funds for the communities that need them most? Identifying efficient mechanisms to cut through bureaucracy is vital. 👨💼 What strategies can we implement to involve corporations in biodiversity financing? Many companies profit from natural resources; it's time they contribute meaningfully to conservation efforts. ⚖ What role do government policies and regulations play in mobilizing these funds? We must advocate for policies that not only promote conservation but also facilitate access to financing for those actively working in this area. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. Investing in biodiversity conservation means investing in our health and future. #Biodiversity #COP16 #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalJustice #Sustainability #ActNow #Finance

Under the theme #PeaceWithNature, the world’s largest nature protection conference #COP16, began in #Colombia yesterday, with a powerful message from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to "convert words into action" and tackle the urgent issue of biodiversity loss. Investing in nature and protecting the ecosystems that sustain life on Earth has never been more critical. Guterres emphasised the need for "significant investment" in the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund, established last year, and called on both public and private sectors to step up and mobilise support. This is a defining moment for our planet—let’s turn commitments into lasting, impactful change! 🌱🌍 UN Biodiversity, G20 Research Group , G7 Research Group GT MEDIA ME LTD #Biodiversity #Environment #Sustainability #NatureConservation #COP16

(#COP16 #UPDATES) I left Cali with mixed feelings after COP16 fizzles out. We MUST celebrate the wins: - DSI - Cali Fund: Countries agreed to establish a mechanism for sharing the benefits derived from digital sequence information on genetic resources with countries and people where they were acquired. - 8j: A permanent subsidiary body on 8j will be established and will allow, for the first time, decisions specifically on the participation of IPLCs to be taken up at future COPs. COP16 also acknowledged the unique role of afro-descendants in the conservation of biodiversity. -Climate: There was consensus that biodiversity loss and climate change must be addressed together and adoption of guidance to help ensure efforts on biodiversity and climate are mutually reinforcing. and we MUST keep fighting for ambition as we move ahead in implementing the Kumming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. After 24 hours of non-stop negotiations, quorum was lost and COP16 was suspended without adopting important Decisions: - Resource Mobilization/Financial Mechanism: Countries were unable to adopt the 2025-2030 resource mobilization strategy which would have provided the guidance needed to achieve GBF targets 18 and 19 - mobilizing the resources needed to fill the 700b/year funding gap through new money and subsidy reform. - Cooperation: While the climate and biodiversity decision captures the important mandate countries need to align climate and biodiversity policies on the ground, the cooperation decision would have enabled further work between the CBD and other important conventions and initiatives around restoration, wetlands, etc. - Monitoring: With the monitoring framework up for adoption at COP16, countries would have been able to, for the first time, report in a way that can be aggregated and analyzed at the global level. - Budget & Report: CBD Secretariat operating budget and official report of COP16 were not adopted before the COP was suspended. This means COP16 is not over, but will resume at a future date and location. 🌍 With #COP16 on biodiversity kicking off today in Colombia, it’s a key moment to consider the role businesses can play in tackling biodiversity loss, and to understand what’s at stake. Biodiversity loss is not just an environmental issue—it’s a strategic challenge that impacts long-term business sustainability and competitiveness. The #GlobalBiodiversityFramework, adopted in 2022 during COP15, outlines 23 action targets for 2030 aimed at stopping and reversing biodiversity loss, with 4 long-term goals set for 2050. At COP16, governments will come together to align their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (#NBSAPs) with this framework. The landscape of corporate environmental responsibility is shifting from a focus solely on climate issues to a broader consideration of nature-related risks, including biodiversity loss. Recognising the significant threats this poses to global economies, many organisations are pledging to address biodiversity loss. However, challenges remain, such as unclear metrics and the need to connect corporate actions to broader biodiversity goals. The introduction of regulations such as the #CSRD and #ESRS E4, as well as the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (#TNFD), represents hopeful steps. Yet, this is just the beginning. Addressing biodiversity loss is not only a regulatory expectation but also a crucial business imperative as it directly impacts operational risks and investor interest in sustainable practices. The time to act is now. How is your business preparing for the biodiversity challenge? 🌱 #Biodiversity #COP16

🌍 Reflections on COP16: Progress and Challenges for Global Biodiversity As someone born in the Amazon with a passion for biodiversity, I followed COP16 in Cali with both hope and concern. There were encouraging milestones: a global tax on products derived from genetic resources was agreed, which could establish one of the largest funds for biodiversity. Additionally, Indigenous communities gained formal recognition in UN biodiversity decision-making—a crucial shift toward inclusive policy. Yet, delays in decision-making created hurdles, especially for developing nations with limited resources to extend their participation. These last-minute compromises don’t just strain logistics; they risk excluding voices from biodiversity-rich regions like Brazil, where the stakes are highest. For those of us in academia, conservation, and policy, COP16 underscored the need for timely, inclusive action beyond promises. How can we ensure that funding translates into real impact? What role should high-biodiversity nations play in global conservation? Protecting biodiversity requires more than pledges—it calls for a fundamental shift in approach and true commitment to transformative action. 🔗https://lnkd.in/ew-rjSxd 🔗https://lnkd.in/eKBtsvUg #COP16 #Biodiversity #Conservation #Amazon #GlobalPolicy #IndigenousRights #SustainableAction

Today, the governments of the UK have launched a set of UK targets for tackling biodiversity loss this decade. This is to align with the global targets that were agreed at the UN Biodiversity COP15 a year and a half ago with an ambitious mission to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2030 – the ‘global biodiversity framework’. We commend the governments for prioritising the release of the UK's National Targets by the August 1st deadline which sends an important signal to the rest of the world that the UK is serious about the delivery of the global framework. While we are strongly supportive of the level of ambition in the UK targets – which broadly match the ambition of the global targets – there is limited new underlying strategy on how these will be achieved in practice, so we expect to see the full detail in the UK’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, which must be released ahead of COP16 this Autumn. As some of the most nature depleted countries in the world, the countries of the UK have a real responsibility to pull their weight in efforts to turn the tide of loss. COP16 is so soon and we need to make it count – the RSPB will be there alongside BirdLife International colleagues making the case. #Nature #COP16 #Biodiversity

The UN Biodiversity Summit COP16 will take place over the next 2 weeks, bringing together representatives from 196 member states to evaluate and advance implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The GBF has a mission to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, with specific targets aimed at protecting ecosystems, reducing species extinction rates, and restoring degraded environments. COP16 will focus on reviewing progress toward these biodiversity goals and targets, particularly the mechanisms and monitoring systems needed to assess this progress (e.g. AI, new remote sensor technologies – on the ground, in the air, in water, and in space – are allowing us to see and inventory the world’s ecosystems and biodiversity as never before). Key agenda items include securing financing for biodiversity initiatives and determining access to digital sequence information, which is crucial for understanding genetic resources. Additionally, contentious issues like biodiversity finance and equitable resource distribution between developed and developing countries are expected to be heavily debated (reminiscent of many of the themes that came up in our pandemic preparedness & response work - https://lnkd.in/dhK4Be5P) The outcomes from this summit will significantly shape global biodiversity conservation efforts over the next several years as nations work toward preventing further biodiversity decline and protecting global ecosystems.
