One impressive statistic. That's all your company really needs to stand out. A single, verifiable, non-skewed data point that shows: 🔎 Why you, why now, and why someone who isn't financially incentivised to support you (such as your regulators, or the press) should care. Then, once you have it, share it - with visuals! Even better is to collect several data points and publish them all, proudly, just like Solynta | true potato seeds has done here in their latest Kenya report. They have the numbers to prove that, indeed, they *are* helping farmers use less fungicide, meaning these growers can achieve ESG goals and still provide enough food for our global nutrition security. This is a great example of how to capture your wins in a way that is newsworthy and easily understandable. https://lnkd.in/exH6EdfV

The global dairy market is currently worth around $900 billion. However, sustainable innovation is essential to future-proof the industry 🥛 Remilk is one of the companies leading the way by using precision fermentation to produce animal-free dairy products. As CTO and Co-Founder Ori Cohavi, PhD explains, this technique creates dairy proteins identical to their animal-derived counterparts, significantly lessening the environmental impact of the finished products. Remilk is featured in FAIRR’s latest progress report, ‘Shifting Diets’, which illustrates that the world’s biggest food companies are overlooking the climate mitigation potential of #AlternativeProteins. The report shares key analysis from Phase 1 of the Protein Diversification engagement and provides an update on the policy and regulation landscape surrounding alternative protein sources. Interesting (and a bit scary!) article on the risks of ownership concentration in the food system industry. The good news is that there are actionable steps to address these challenges, from supporting diversified and regenerative agricultural practices to investing in smaller, mission-driven food companies. It’s also time to hold policymakers accountable for whose interests are being prioritized and to ensure that the systems bringing food to market are transparent and optimized not just financially but also socially and environmentally. https://lnkd.in/eJd4TnbC #sustainableagriculture #regenerativeagriculture #foodsystems #impact #impactinvesting

🌍 #FAO2024 Report on #AgrifoodSystems Transformation: Urgent Actions The newly released FAO 2024 report, “The State of Food and Agriculture: Value-Driven Transformation of Agrifood Systems,” reveals over $10 trillion in hidden costs—health, environmental, and social damages—embedded in agrifood systems. These costs, often hidden in market prices, disproportionately affect vulnerable communities and ecosystems, highlighting the need for “true cost accounting.” Key strategies include: • 🍽️ Dietary Shifts: Encourage healthier diets to reduce chronic diseases and environmental impacts. • 🌾 Support for Small Producers: Implement policies to ease financial pressures on smallholders adopting sustainable practices. • 🏛️ Institutional Alignment: Strengthen governance to integrate true costs in pricing and production. • 📊 Tailored National Policies: Adapt policies to each country’s agrifood system, from subsidies to market access. • 🤝 Sector-Wide Accountability: Mobilize governments, companies, and consumers to address these systemic costs collaboratively. Without decisive action, these hidden costs will continue undermining sustainability and economic stability. Source: https://lnkd.in/eZkRqrXS

The Download: introducing the Food issue https://ift.tt/Yz5AODj This is today’s edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what’s going on in the world of technology. Introducing: the Food issue What are we going to eat? It is the eternal question. We humans have been asking ourselves this for as long as we have been human. The question itself can be tedious, exciting, urgent, or desperate, depending on who is asking and where. There are many parts of the world where there is no answer. Even when hunger isn’t an acute issue, it can remain a persistently chronic one. Some 2.3 billion people around the world suffer from food insecurity, according to the World Health Organization. In the United States alone, the USDA has found that more than 47 million people live in food-insecure households. This issue is all about food and how we can use technology—high and low tech—to feed more people. Here’s a sneak peek at just some of what you can expect: + This issue’s cover feature explores the thorny issue of herbicide-resistant weeds: a problem which is just, well, growing. + Researchers, farmers, and global agricultural institutions in Africa are tackling hunger by reviving nearly forgotten indigenous crops. But as is the case with many such initiatives, a lot hinges on sufficient investment and attention. + If we are ever to spend any time on Mars, we’re going to need to grow our own food there. But while the soil is poisonous, efforts to make it arable could not only help us bring life to Mars—it could also help support life here on Earth. + Would you eat food that originates from carbon-hungry bacteria munching on greenhouse gases? These startups are betting that you will.
