Other than huge environmental impacts from marine transportation fuels, attention is required to the the ageing fleet of oil tankes. Typically, tankers are demolished around 15-20 years old, but now, shipowners are extending their lifespan. This practice increases risks of environmental hazards due to leaks and spills, safety of deteriorating infrastructure, and regulatory challenges as older ships struggle to meet modern standards. Estimates show need to replace about 1,100 crude tankers, including 400 very large crude carriers or VLCCs, but shipyards are prioritizing container and LNG ships. Up to 850 tankers have left conventional trading to transport sanctioned oil from Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, tightening fleet availability. Orders are being fulfilled for at least five dual-fuel ammonia-ready VLCCs from China, with deliveries starting in 2026. This is a step towards modernizing the fleet and ensuring sustainability. Balancing economic gains with safety and environmental protection is crucial. Investing in newer, greener vessels is the way forward. #MaritimeSafety #Sustainability #ShippingIndustry https://lnkd.in/ePSRPEaT

Navigating the Seas: Key Types of Vessels in Maritime Trade In the dynamic world of maritime trade, various types of vessels play crucial roles in transporting goods across the globe. Here’s a quick overview: Container Ships: Essential for global trade, these vessels carry standardized cargo containers, making them pivotal in international logistics. Tankers: Specializing in transporting liquid cargoes such as oil, chemicals, and gas, tankers are integral to the energy and chemical industries. Bulk Carriers: Designed for carrying unpackaged bulk cargo like coal, grain, and minerals, these ships are vital for commodity transportation. Ro-Ro Ships (Roll-on/Roll-off): These ships are used for transporting vehicles and cargo that can be driven on and off the vessel. LNG Carriers: Specialized tankers designed for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) in cryogenic conditions. Fishing Vessels: These include trawlers and longliners, essential for the global seafood supply chain. Each vessel type is tailored to meet specific transportation needs, ensuring efficient and effective global trade. #MaritimeIndustry #Shipping #Logistics #SeaTrade #VesselTypes

Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte. Ltd. has recently ordered four dual-fuel 60,000-cbm #LPGcarriers from CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, marking the first such order in nearly a decade for delivery between 2027 and 2028. The company's $340m investment highlights its commitment to green and #technologydriven #growth in the #shippingindustry. Gas players said the 60,000-cbm LPG ship is used for niche trade. They trade in South America and to some extent the transatlantic, as well as for transporting long-haul ammonia. “An LGC has always been the largest ammonia carrier due to infrastructure and trading restrictions,” said one shipping source. “But the future ammonia trade really looks different…these new 60,000-cbm vessels may be used to fill a gap or a transition period.” This move aligns with Eastern Pacific's reputation for investing in a versatile fleet. It is probably one of the most active companies in the #shipbuilding market estimated to have over 120 #newbuildings worth more than $10bn booked on its orderbook, including container ships, #PCTCs, #VLACs, #ULECs, suezmax #tankers, newcastlemax #bulkers and #LNGcarriers. “Real charter agreements could emerge where owners let out a vessel at a headline rate of or close to zero for a short time,” said Clare Pennington, LNG shipping expert at commodity consultancy ICIS. “What could happen is a situation where some owners are stuck with a steam vessel and are balancing the cost of [taking it off market] or letting it out so it doesn’t warm up. “It will also depend on how long owners might have to wait to scrap a vessel, and making calculations on what costs them less,” she said.

Maersk heads to China for up to twelve 16,000 teu ships Brokers are reporting Maersk has gone to China for its next phase of expansion, with landmark orders for LNG dual-fuel vessels, a type of propulsion it had previously distanced itself from. Multiple broking houses have the Danish carrier signing for six firm 16,000 teu ships at New Times Shipbuilding in a contract that comes with options for six more vessels. Unveiling its interims in August, Maersk outlined its newbuild policy through to 2030, with two notable news items. First, its intention not to increase its fleet size above today’s 4.3m teu through to the end of the decade, and secondly, Maersk’s admission that it will proceed with orders for dual fuel ships which can use bio-LNG, a fuel type the carrier had previously dismissed. https://lnkd.in/gt_dJ5pv

"Global shipowners are racing to tighten scrutiny of Chinese shipyards as soaring demand for liquefied natural gas carriers forces them to turn to inexperienced manufacturers in the world’s second-largest economy." "The trend highlights shipowners’ growing dependence on Chinese shipyards, despite their limited experience in building LNG vessels. Demand for the super-chilled fuel has left more established shipyards in South Korea unable to meet the need for new vessels, forcing the industry to seek alternatives." "The global LNG carrier fleet is expected to rise from 660 to 1,040 vessels by 2029, according to analysis group Drewry." "Although Chinese shipyards built just 6 per cent of the current fleet by volume, they are due to deliver over a fifth of the LNG carriers on order, according to industry group the International Gas Union." "Their increasing role in LNG carrier production mirrors China’s earlier takeover of other shipbuilding sectors, as its state-backed shipyards drew orders by undercutting rivals in South Korea and Japan on price. The average cost of building an LNG carrier in China is about $247mn, compared with $265mn in South Korea, according to Drewry." #LNG #LNGCarrierFleet

Enabling a VLCC that has been moving crude oil to switch to clean products is not straightforward. It is time consuming and expensive. The charterer will typically use a time-chartered ship for such a voyage. If the entire voyage, including about 30 days for clean-up, takes around 90 days, we estimate the hire at $4 Million (at $45,000/day). Adding to that the costs for fuel and chemicals, de-slopping charges, the additional manpower cost, as well as bunkers and lightering costs would bring the total cost of the voyage to $7.0 M. However, a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation illustrates that the savings on freight are so high that (at least at the moment) it is worth it. In today’s market, moving a 90,000 Metric Ton (MT) cargo of diesel on an LR2 from the Arabian Gulf to the UKC costs $4.4 million, or $49/ton. This is almost double the cost of the VLCC, which is $7 million for 280,000 tons, or $25/ton. - Erik Broekhuizen, POTEN & PARTNERS
