When building a resume for the Oil & Gas job market, you want to avoid the ‘everything and the kitchen sink’ approach. What do I mean? I mean listing everything you’ve done in your career without any direction or targeting. For instance, if you’re aiming for production engineering roles, but your content is a collection of completions, production, and operations engineering content, then you’ll most likely come across as a ‘maybe’ to recruiters. With this competitive O&G market, the last thing you want is to be slotted as a maybe! If you’re aiming for production roles, you’ll want to tailor the top 1/4 portion of your resume to be directly aligned with your production skills and impacts. In fact, you’ll want to show how your completions and operations engineering experience actually aligns with production as well based on transferable skills. Like I always mention, use the job description like a blueprint to match your experience with their requirements. I guarantee you’ll get more calls and job offers when you do this! #oilgas #oilandgas #energy #jobseekers #hiringandpromotion #energystrong #petroleum

Hi oil and gas friends! Your job search will be much more effective if you include your hard skills and soft skills in your CV/resume, and in your Linkedin profile. Your SOFT SKILLS are the interpersonal skills and character traits you have, that enable you to communicate and collaborate effectively with others, and to adapt to various situations. Soft skills are usually TRANSFERABLE to other jobs, even if those jobs are completely different. Here are five examples of SOFT SKILLS: 1. communication skills 2. teamwork 3. adaptability 4. leadership 5. time management Your HARD SKILLS are the specific abilities or areas of knowlege you have, that are directly RELATED TO YOUR JOB. They are teachable, and often quantifiable. But usually they are NOT transferable to other jobs. Here are three examples of HARD SKILLS in each of the three main sectors of the oil and gas industry: Upstream:- 1. drilling engineering 2. seismic interpretation 3. offshore operations Midstream:- 1. pipeline design 2. transportation and storage 3. pump and compressor systems Downstream:- 1. refining process operations 2. fuel production and blending 3. petrochemical processing Finally, here are three HARD SKILLS of an oil and gas company CEO: 1. business development 2. mergers and acquisitions 3. stakeholder and investor relations Your CV/resume and your Linkedin profile should contain about forty skills, say 30 hard skills and 10 soft skills. Of course, they must all be RELEVANT to the job you were doing at the time. And ideally, most of them should be in the JOB DESCRIPTION of the job you are applying for. So get cracking, and start compiling a list of YOUR hard and soft skills! And then put them into both your CV/resume and your Linkedin profile. Be sure you really do HAVE the skills, as you may well be questioned about them in the interview. And be sure they are actually RELEVANT to the jobs you are applying for. Let me know in the comments which SOFT skills you think are the most important for a supervisor or manager to have. =================================== Hi there, I'm David Snow, and I help oil and gas leaders to MARKET themselves effectivey to companies to land their DREAM JOB. This was written since November 2013 and never posted it... I have always wondered how recruitment into the Oil & Gas industry is done. My expectation normally is that any regular position open in any industry can be filled by a competent candidate, for instance, positions in Accounting & Finance, Mgt., HR, Admin., Sales etc. But how come in the Nigerian Oil & Gas industry vacancies exist in the public domain for-information-only! and not to be acted upon. Except for core technical positions in that industry that require a high level of hands-on experience, the competence required can still be inculcated into suitably qualified persons who possess prerequisite academic and educational qualifications. l also wonder, as exclusive, high-tech and challenging the industry is, why there's virtually no training programmes accessible to numerous people where affordable trainings and certifications can be done to adequately prepare one to handle challenges of the job in that industry, like what you have in telecoms/IT industry where you can acquire eg. Cisco, Microsoft, SUN, Project Mgt. etc. training /certifications that can afford one an opportunity to launch a career into the oil & gas industry. I am aware that there are various aspects of work functions, even in the core areas like well engineering, pipeline mgt., drilling, automation, instrumentation etc that a training/certification can give one a leverage to partake in the excellent work environment available to the Oil & Gas industry. Given the above scenario, what does it take to join this industry? This is the question on the lips of many interested persons. As a recruiter, kindly give your opinion.

Managing a workforce in the Oil & Gas sector is no easy feat. From fluctuating commodity prices to niche skillsets, operational demands, and difficult project locations—E&P companies face an array of challenges when it comes to resourcing. That’s why I believe the hiring of top-tier E&P consultants is more than just a necessity; it’s a strategic advantage. Here are a few reasons why bringing in high-quality expert consultants can make a significant difference: 1- Access to Niche Expertise: Sometimes, projects require specialized skills that aren’t needed full-time in your organization. By bringing in highly qualified consultants, you can leverage their expertise exactly when it’s needed. They solve specific technical challenges, offer insight into specialized areas, and allow your team to stay agile—scaling resources up or down as projects demand. 2- Navigating Financial Challenges: In times of financial strain, whether due to low commodity prices or other factors, having experienced consultants on board helps ensure that projects continue to move forward. These experts can hit the ground running, providing swift, flexible, and high-impact contributions that help you meet project goals without the long-term commitment of additional headcount. 3- Reducing Risk: Ensuring the right skillsets are deployed is crucial to minimizing project risks. Top-tier consultants are vetted and technically qualified, meaning they bring immediate value to your team. Their ability to make a quick, positive impact is one of the reasons why hiring the right people should be a strategic priority. At OPC, we’ve designed our business model around reducing these very risks. Our clients benefit from both capacity and capability, accessing a pool of over 4,000 technical consultants—each carefully vetted and qualified. We provide the right people, at the right time, to help our clients deliver their projects successfully.

How do you set yourself apart as a top 1% 'unicorn' candidate for new jobs across Oil, Gas, Energy & Technology? Use these three tips: 1) Zero in on the minimum requirements section of a job description. You can reverse engineer your next career move by reading 5-10 job descriptions for the type(s) of roles you'd like to transition into. Assess the skills and basic requirements listed consistently in these job descriptions, closely taking note of any GAPS between your experience and their requirements. 2) Tailor the top 1/4 portion of your resume to align as closely as possible to the minimum requirements. Be direct about your fit and don't withhold important details that could set you apart. Remember, the goal is to get a conversation - a meaningful, in-depth conversation about your qualifications - rather than a brief chat about whether you're actually the right fit for a role. If the top 1/4 portion of your resume is direct about your fit, you'll get an interview. 3) Show rather than tell readers why you're the perfect fit for a role. Many job seekers include generic overviews in their resume that look something like this: Excellent communicator with experience across project management, operations and negotiation. Look familiar? Unfortunately, this just isn't good enough because it looks like everyone else's resume summaries! Try this: Strong negotiator with 12+ years of experience stewarding P&L, OPEX and CAPEX while securing win-win EPC contracts for capital projects ranging from $3MM to $2B. See the difference? The more data and hard skills you include, the more invaluable you will be for employers. Hope this helps, O&G friends! #oilgas #oilandgas #jobseekers #energy #energystrong
