When starting a project, typically your plan is to make it to the finish line and leave the space better then how it started! But plans are made to be changed, right?? Getting your space back into shape means letting go of things that no longer serve you for one reason or another. At the end of every project you are left with a completed space that brings you joy + happiness and a corner filled with discarded items. “I’d like to ask for your help.” Donor: “Well, now I have absolutely no clue what you want from me.” As fundraisers, we’ve all been there. But here’s the truth: vague language creates confusion and erodes trust. If you’re not clear about your intentions, you risk losing the donor’s confidence—and their support. Here’s how to build trust and avoid confusion: 𝗦𝗮𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻: Avoid euphemisms. If you’re discussing a potential gift, be upfront about it. 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Not sure it’s the right time? Simply ask if they’re open to a conversation about giving. 𝗕𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁: Donors should never feel blindsided by a request. Honesty and clarity go a long way.
