✨ Hiring #refugees in the UK will make our businesses and communities stronger. Some members of the CBRE UK Talent Team joined 40 other major employers at the job fair for refugees co-organised by Indeed and Tent Partnership for Refugees in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency, and DWP. 👍🏻 The UK currently welcomes over 600,000 refugees and other forcibly displaced people, representing a diversity of talent and experience. Yet they face many obstacles when trying to find a job, including language skills, a lack of social and professional networks, and childcare solutions. The private sector has an essential role to play in helping refugees to integrate economically in the UK. On this #WorldRefugeeDay, I’m reflecting on how I would cope if I was forced to flee my home, my family, my life.  If I had to leave everything familiar and stable, find a new place to live, learn a new language, emotionally process and look towards the future.  How would I find new friends, find a job? This past year has seen considerable political shifts impacting the lives of refugees in the UK.  It has been significant in the journey of #TentUK - with our official launch in March and the co-hosting of refugee focused job fairs. Many of our company members are establishing or growing refugee hiring programmes, and more mentors-mentees have been matched. We’ve developed more UK specific guidance and tools to support companies to connect with more refugees. I’ve also stood on a stage more than ever before and I continue to learn with our UK partners about ways to overcome barriers for refugees to find work. And yet, the most impactful moments for me are when a company tells me months after an event about their shifts in attitudes or approach as the result of hearing directly from a refugee. When I hear the positive results of a refugee mentee matched with a mentor from one of our member companies. When I meet someone who has been forced to flee their home country and experienced massive life changes and now is focused on their job and taking some time off work in the summer.  Beyond today, I’ll keep learning from refugees, connecting with our member companies who are hiring more refugees, seeking more opportunities to increase our collective impact.  I’m wondering what you’ll do? #worldrefugeeday 

Do you like happy endings? If so, I've got a story for you about a marketing professional, her former leader, and the coach who brought them together. Three years ago, I met My Phung Vuong through the World Skills Employment Centre Empowering Newcomer Women program, which helps newcomer women build confidence to find work in Canada. Phung attended my Networking workshop, geared to help participants develop networking skills to approach others and explore opportunities through 1:1 informational interviews. She applied her learnings right away. After I shared a job posting on LinkedIn, Phung reached out to me, even though she didn't know me well. She asked me if I knew Tim Skelly, the hiring manager for the role I shared. I did! Then she asked me if I could get her resume to him for consideration. I could - and I did! Even though it was not easy for Phung to reach out, she did. She didn't allow herself to be limited - she saw the possibility, and went for it. She remembered one of the key learnings from my workshop: "If you don't ask, you don't get". And by asking me for help, she applied another learning: "Look 'through' your network instead of 'at' it" (I've included a link in the comments to an article about this concept). Phung got an interview - then another. Tim hired her - she got the job! Fast forward to now. Three years after she was offered that job, Phung asked if she could meet us for coffee. She was incredibly grateful for my help, and also grateful Tim gave her a chance to gain some Canadian work experience. She had since moved to Vietnam, and was back in Canada for a short while. Because of the pandemic, we had never met in person! The photo below was taken last Friday. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet, catch up on life, and recall the circumstances that brought us all together in the first place. The network truly is magical. People come in and out of our lives for different reasons, and at different times. Open yourself to experience that magic. Ask for conversations. Reach out to ask for help when you need it - like getting your resume into the right hands when you apply for jobs.
