But with 106,000 miles, after a full charge in prep for a trip, I hit a pothole and immediately the BMS became unattached, requiring a battery pack replacement. Allow me to share the details, as it will help others. 1. How far do you live from the nearest Tesla Service Center? Me? 62 miles. 2. Do you have towing service? My AAA was only 3 miles. #ouch I bumped it to 100 miles as a result. My car insurance coverage with towing did not cover this car as I was leasing it. Teslas require a flatbed truck I was told. $520 towing fee. 3. The battery pack & labor was covered, but the fee to trouble shoot was $107 4. I asked for a loaner and received another 2018 X. Very cool. 5. They said one week and it took them one week plus 45 minutes. The service tech stayed late to finish up and properly test its ability to hold a charge on the new pack. 6. New warranty on battery pack (100kW) is 50,000 miles or 4 years. The old warranty had 44,000 miles left or two more years. 7. Good as new!

Understanding the task people are buying a product to fulfill is so important. Is the task to get from point A to point B, generally within a radius of some max 100-300 km. with an occasional longer trip, where you can live with needing a little more planning and possibly a couple of stops that would otherwise not be needed. Or, is the task something else? Is there possibly a higher level task like a peace of mind, or feeling of security, or feeling of freedom, or something like that which EVs are not yet living up to, and thus stopping EVs to be adopted as tools for these tasks?? Once you identify the task you will be better able to understand the requirements of the product and the capabilities required to deliver it. As a fan and owner of a Battery Electric vehicle, we should also accept that it's quite likely Tesla's massive sales miss will be a key moment in the story of BEV adoption. So far EV's have rather rapidly taken over the lowest hanging fruit. It varies across markets, but from the US to UK to Norway, current EV buyers are 3 times more wealthy than an average HH, they are buying them as second or third cars, and they overwhelmingly live in Urban areas. Many people are leasing not buying and many are fleet vehicles. The speed penetrating this market, a niche, means nothing when it comes to bridging the vanguard to the mass market. The success or failure of any future growth beyond this thin tranche will depend on many things, fast charger rollout, longer range, lower production costs, cheaper electricity, social norming, and many more factors. I think this is a good example of analysts not really understanding the population. Rationally EV's are a good idea for many. Rationally range anxiety shouldn't be an issue for 99% of owners Rationally EV's are cheaper to own for most users over 5 years Rationally Cheap Chinese EV's will sweep across many markets Rationally EV's are a better car for most people. But people are not rational./ Peoples interest and openness to EV's changes remarkably little over time. People like what they have, what they know, what they understand. I see rather slow EV sales being the trend line for the next few years, it doesn't mean they will fail, it doesn't mean they are not a good idea, it means changes take time and most people don't want to take risks on the second most expensive thing they buy. The big unknown is probably the potential rapid rise of Hybrids, a movement which gets to the heart of the rational vs emotional debate.

And the reason I keep banging on about it is because it's a great example of behavioural change that holds back other brands or categories. The majority of the population outsources their decisions to those around them, call it "social contagion", "herd mentality", or just "copying" This means the number of people buying an EV isn't the important thing; it's their connectedness. 1000 EV sales up and down the UK will have less future impact than 500 if their owners have some geographical connection. It's the same approach for Facebook. They didn't recruit 1,000 users across North America; they focused on one college to provide local reinforcement to help establish the new behaviour. So whether you're trying to get people to adopt EVs, switch from a competitor's protein powder or sell faster broadband, you're in the behavioural change game, and behavioural change needs local reinforcement, not rational arguments.
