How is Panasonic in Cardiff using green energy to make Microwave Ovens? Panasonic Manufacturing UK Ltd (PMUK) this week announced the official opening of Europe’s first Panasonic HX demonstration facility to be powered by renewable sources, based in Cardiff, UK. As part of Panasonic’s efforts to enable greener manufacturing, the 50-year-old manufacturing plant in Cardiff has been fitted with a combination of hydrogen fuel cells powered by green hydrogen, solar PV and battery storage, all steered by Panasonic’s proprietary Energy Management System (EMS). Microwave oven production represents the main electricity and overall energy need at the site; the Panasonic HX installation will power this microwave oven assembly using renewable energy. Panasonic is unique in its efforts to generate electricity for its factories with 100% renewable energy by using green hydrogen combined with solar energy to generate electricity in-house and control the coordination of three energy sources, including the batteries which store the PV energy when the factory isn’t in operation, such as on weekends. The company is committed to the long-term development of hydrogen and sustainable energy solutions as part of its Panasonic HX business strategy. Masahiro Shinada, President & CEO, Panasonic Corporation, emphasised: “This facility will use green hydrogen produced in the UK. We believe that this is the place where we can take a big step towards the future by combining British and Japanese Technology. It is our sincere hope that this facility can be used as a showcase to foster diverse partnerships, accelerate innovation through the combination of technologies, and contribute to the development of the UK’s hydrogen-related industry... #Wales #Manufacturing #Green #Energy Read more including comments from Robert Blowers - Managing Director of Panasonic Manufacturing UK, and Eluned Morgan MS, First Minister of Wales, here: https://lnkd.in/eeXKFaeM

Renewables intermittency is the main challenge in Green H2 and Power-To-X plants. How to manage variability on energy sources, producing truly green H2 while fulfilling H2 demand variability from consumers ? Well, not an easy task. How to couple the fast electron side with the rigid molecule side in Power-To-X applications? Intelligent Energy Management is a must - forecasting of renewables, coupled with real-time energy market interaction and storage use optimization helps balance variability and sustain profitable operations with potential for added profits via delivery of ancillary services at premium price. Even more so for Power-To-X where smart Energy Management allows to couple the slow and rigid conversion units, like the Haber–Bosch process, with the Green H2 production variability, minimizing impact of intermittency on equipment maintenance, catalyzers life and operation costs Learn more about intelligent OPTIMAX for Green H2/Power-To-X: https://lnkd.in/dMEbRQ5e

1/ New research @UniLUT https://lnkd.in/dDb9k-ZR demonstrates that a #100RE system benefits strongly from smart charging of electric vehicles (EVs), vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality, and flexibility of electrolysers. The insights have been obtained on the case of #Japan. 2/ Research on #100RE of #Japan in 1-h & 9-regions resolution used as basis for EVs & electrolyser flexibility investigation. https://lnkd.in/dn_Te3xZ The #Japan energy system will be largely based on a wind-solar resource mix as for most countries of the Northern hemisphere. 3/ Literature review: Concept of smart charging of EVs & V2G was introduced in 2000s and investigated in various studies. Systematic analyses in sector-coupled systems are rather rare, due to lack of scenario analyses, limited model description, or not yet included functionality. 4/ Methods: LUT Energy System Transition Model (LUT-ESTM) was expanded for smart charging of EVs & V2G functionality for expanding flexibility in #PtXeconomy analyses. https://lnkd.in/dwWWwzvD LUT-ESTM is one in two most used tools for #100RE studies https://lnkd.in/dn8W_73i 5/ Smart charging & V2G leads to 35% less utility-scale electricity storage demand. Electrolysers alone can reduce the battery demand by 33%. All 3 flexibility options together can reduce the battery capacity by 55%. 6/ Interestingly, thermal energy storage (TES) also benefits from EVs flexibility by 20-25% capacity reduction, also flexible electrolysers reduce the TES by 45%. All 3 flexibility options together can reduce TES capacity demand by up to 60%. 7/ Impact of low-cost flexibility on the supply structure leads to higher shares of low-cost renewable electricity & reduced higher cost renewables, such as geothermal (-72%), bioenergy (-51%), offshore wind (-5%) – for the case of #Japan. 8/ Levelised cost of storage (LCOS) decline by 8% due to smart charging & 15% with both EVs flexibility options. Electrolyser flexibility alone can reduce LCOS by 20%. All 3 flexibility options can reduce the LCOE by up to 26%. Total energy system cost can decline by up to 8%. 9/ Open question remains for the transaction costs/ price of V2G services. For 10 €/MWh more than 50% of the V2G storage throughput potential remains in the market and reaches 30 TWh. Even for 30-50 €/MWh 8-18 TWh throughput remains. V2G is a quite valuable flexibility option. 10/ Conclusions: New demand response flexibility (smart charging, V2G, electrolysers) can reduce system cost by 8%, reduce curtailment & storage capacities, enable more low-cost renewables. Remuneration of this flexibility is due to lower cost electricity, requires revenues (V2G).
