What do US Solar Tariffs mean for the future of clean energy? The US Commerce Department is imposing new tariffs on solar panel imports from Southeast Asia, raising questions about how this will affect domestic manufacturers and project developers. With rising costs and a focus on fair competition, can the US achieve its clean energy goals? A new report from Clean Energy Associates (CEA) outlines how new tariffs from the latest antidumping and countervailing duty (AD/CVD) investigation on solar cells and panels could increase costs to a level that would significantly restrict solar supply and installations in the United States.
Analysis says new AD/CVD could raise panel prices in US by 15¢/W on top of everything else

Bitter Pill or Sweet Medicine? New anti-dumping and countervailing duties (AD/CVD) could potentially increase the prices of solar panels in the US by 15 cents per watt, potentially shocking the industry. However, higher tariffs on solar panels could boost U.S. jobs and innovation in panel manufacturing, reducing pollution and fossil fuel use. On the bright side, I remain pretty much optimistic that this decision will propel KB Racking forward, given our competitive pricing advantage. #SolarEnergyLeadership #RenewableEnergySolutions #ADCVDDuties #FlatRoofSolar #CommercialSolarProjects #SolarRacking

Over the past four years, U.S. solar supply chains have faced unprecedented scrutiny, with successive administrations imposing substantial tariffs on solar array component imports. These high tariffs on solar modules risk driving component prices to potentially unsustainable levels. BroadRange Logistics When the Biden Administration delayed the latest round of module tariffs until June 2024, it triggered a purchasing frenzy among solar EPCs, eager to buy as many products as possible before prices spike. However, one unintended consequence is that EPCs now need storage for the modules they're purchasing. Long interconnection queues are slowing project progress nationwide, requiring these modules to be stored rather than going directly from suppliers to the field. https://lnkd.in/eKDMRYig #SolarEnergy #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #EPC #EnergyStorage #SustainableEnergy

What a week for #cleanenergy trade policy! Today the Biden Administration announced the removal of the bifacial exemption to the Section 201 global tariffs on #solar cells and modules, as well as updated guidance for the Domestic Content Bonus. This follows on Tuesday's Section 301 announcement - which has significant implications for #energystorage as well as EVs - and yesterday's initiation of the AD/CVD investigation into solar cells (whether or not assembled into modules) from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. I and other members of Clean Energy Associates (CEA) Market Intelligence team are looking into *all* of these policy developments, and will be issuing communiques on the details of these policies and their expected impacts. These will go first to our clients, and will be later posted to the CEA website. #energytransition

PV Magazine explains just how much the tariffs, etc. drive up the price of modules in the US. This becomes especially apparent when we are working with multinational companies that cannot believe how much more expensive solar is in the US vs. Europe or Asia. "Solar panel import tariffs are affecting the industry by increasing prices by up to 286% Clean Energy Associates released a summary of the seven solar module trade policies and solar panel import tariffs currently in place, including AD/CVD rulings, Section 201/302, and the Uyghur Protection Act. These tariffs have significantly increased, or will increase, the cost of hardware imports into the United states – predominantly from China, but not exclusively – by 91% to 286%. In total, a solar module initially costing a dime per watt could eventually cost between $0.191 and $0.38 per watt – an increase of 91% to 286%."
