You ever walk down a well-marked trail, see a well-traveled game trail spur off in the opposite direction, and think: Hmmm, where does that trail lead? Well, now I know. When I’m taking the kids on a little hike, rarely does a trail lead us exactly where I think it will. And sometimes that makes things a little... uncomfortable – especially with a certain type A daughter who likes to know exactly *everything* concerning where, when, and how long. Sometimes we end up walking 4.5 miles instead of 2 miles...in 100° weather...on a sunny day...at noon.🥵 (Don't worry, we went straight to the pool when we were done.) But sometimes the good Lord rewards your labor. You know where that trail led? To a truly magical, tranquil spot where we could kick off our boots, wade in the water, and find sharks' teeth with friends. It was declared the best. day. ever. By my girls.🥰 And really, that is how life is. It’s a bunch of different paths that we choose to take. You can take the path that others laid out for you. Or you could go off script. Take a different trail. Sometimes it'll be tough. But sometimes it'll be truly epic. "They don't put trees in the fairway!" Kent Cravens I was reminded of this fact during a recent golf outing with my good friend and colleague, Kent Cravens. It's true. If we hit the ball in the fairway, there are no impediments to get to the green. It's simple, hit the fairway, hit the green, make two putts and walk away with a par. If you one putt you walk away with a birdie. At least that's how they do it on TV. It's simple, not easy. You get one more shot on the par 5's and one less shot on the par 3's, but for the most part, if you hit fairways and greens, you'll shoot par or better. That's the high percentage play. But other factors come into play. In my case, the ability to hit said fairways every time, or the green from even a short distance away. Often my drives do end up in the trees, and my approaches in the greenside bunker. And in those cases, it's time to get creative. Find a window through the trees, hit a shot that lands softly near the pin, find a way to make par. 100 yards away, with trees in front and a bunker between you and the flag to make par? That's what I call a "hero opportunity." The chance to do something that has never been done before and that you have an opportunity to do based on the unfortunate circumstances that put you in that position. So, yes, hitting fairways and greens is the easiest way to pars and birdies, but we don't always do that, so we have opportunities to be heroic. Just like in life, following the proven path is the easiest way to get consistent reliable results. But sometimes things don't go as planned. And that's when we get an opportunity to do something that's never been done before. How do you face the unexpected twists and turns of life? Do you welcome the challenges and cherish the opportunity to be a hero? Or do you always play it safe and make sure you follow the plan?
