What is Merchandising? Trying to explain what my job is to friends and family often leads me to giving the simple answer of “Yeah, it’s like buying.” However, whilst us Merchandisers work hand in hand with our Buying counterparts to deliver exciting and profitable product ranges our roles are in fact quite different and varied. The Merchandising role covers a wide variety of tasks, some of which include: · Root Cause Analysis – Understanding the factors behind the sales figures and any variances to plan, the previous week or the previous year · Range Planning – Using the output of the analysis to make informed range planning decisions, addressing any range gaps, capitalising on new momentum or removing slow sellers · Forecasting and Budgeting – Using historical sales data to forecast future sales at line level whilst also setting sales and stock budget targets across the whole category · Creating Stocking Strategies – Understanding the nuances of every category; from how customers shop, where stock is sourced from, rate of sale, and the peaks & troughs in demand, to create the right stocking strategy to maximise availability and control costs · Market Insights – Using market insights from Tradeshows, GFK data, Comp Shopping, Google Trends and LinkedIn among others to quantify current range performance and potential future ranging decisions · Supplier Management – Building a strong collaborative relationship with suppliers · Cross Functional Working – Work with numerous other functions, such as Distribution, Finance, Marketing, Stores and Digital teams to execute category strategy. This gives Merchandisers a whole range of transferable skills. Following Homebase entering administration I am currently looking for my next exciting career move; if you have a vacancy in your team that would benefit from any of the skills I have listed above then please reach out for a chat. Fellow Merchandisers, we do so much, what have I missed?

Estee Lauder is all in on Amazon. Clinique launched on Amazon in March. Dr Jart is now on Amazon. They were exclusive at Sephora. Kiehls (L'Oreal) is on Amazon. Protecting your brand isn't about avoiding Amazon. It's about executing Amazon incredibly well. Growing a brand is about understanding where your customer is shopping, and being available there. There are some examples where super-restrictive selling makes sense. But in general, the job is to be where the consumer is. The consumer is shopping (& researching) on Amazon. ****************************************************************************** Maverick Sales. We are builders. FMCG. OTC. Beauty. Bricks & Mortar.
