Mission Success with Luna The Bully Our client saw our video of Raffa the Dachshund and requested to teach Luna to do the same! Much to our surprise we got her to do the “Boowww” command in just a few attempts. You can hear the sheer happiness in our client’s voice😁. I wasn’t sure that we’d get it done with our first attempt but we got it done. I leverage Luna’s food drive to get her to do this trick. This is why I keep on stressing on my Three Pillars of Dog Training: 1. Engagement 2. Trust 3. Drive Leveraging all three lays the foundation for great obedience and sets you up for success. “She was powerful not because she wasn’t scared but because she went on so strongly, despite the fear.” And so Torah the #dutchshepherd had her go....Torah nailed this first time without any training and without any resets. When I first did this with Roxy a few weeks back I had to run the last few blocks to keep her going to the end. If you wondered who was fastest...I timed Torah just over a second faster. Building Engagement with Kaiser. Kaiser is my client’s Malinois. We just introduced him to his new tug toy. These were our goals: 1. Get him to play tug-of-War 2. Encourage him to possess it. 3. Build his confidence through engagement. 4. Get him to bite the tug and not the handles. 5. Get him to readjust his bite and bite down with his back teeth. Notes: He wasn’t really interested at first. He has the toy drive. However, he was unsure. Here’s what I did to fix this: ✔️ Notice my body language and voice. ✔️I turned my back on him to seem less intimidating. ✔️ I animated my body and voice to encourage him. ✔️ I verbally and physically rewarded him. ✔️ I insisted that he bite the tug and not the handles. ✔️ I rewarded him when he bit the tug properly. ✔️ I kept moving to animate the tug and leverage his prey drive. ✔️ This keeps him in prey drive. ✔️ I allowed him to possess it when he deserved it. ✔️ This built his confidence and he felt more encouraged. The actions of myself and his owner leveraged his prey drive. This encouraged him to overcome his uncertainty. We achieved our goals for the session. You can replicate this with your dog to build their engagement through games like this. This session ties into the “Enagement” and “Drive” pillars of dog training. The Joy of Seeing a Dog Return for a Holiday One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the joy of seeing a dog I’ve trained come back for a refresher session or a short stay with us. Watching them recognize me is priceless — there’s an initial sniff, followed by the moment of realization, and then pure happiness: tail wagging, excited yips, and a full-on zoom around! What stands out to me is the sense of maturity many of these dogs display after spending time with their families. Their home routines, love, and care seem to nurture their confidence. Returning to us feels like a happy reunion, giving them the chance to reconnect with doggy friends, our team, and the behaviors we’ve worked on together. It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to refine their skills, and it’s amazing to see how they thrive when given structure and attention. For me, moments like these are a gentle reminder to appreciate the simple joys of what we do. TUG-OF-WAR IS VITAL FOR STIMULATION Some dogs are ridiculously energetic. Just like Dutchess the Frenchie. Venting this energy can be challenging. I’m sure you’ve experienced the same. This is why I recommend using tug-of-war. Why should you do this your dog?? It mentally and physically stimulates them. It can be more effective than long walks. Because a dog will burn more: 1. Mental energy 2. Physical energy How does it do this? ✔️ Tug-of-war literally makes your dog give their all. ✔️They harness all mental and physical energy. It must be theirs! ✔️Even this small frenchie doesn’t back down. ✔️The movement of the rope triggers her prey drive. ✔️She wants her rope so much. ✔️She wants to possess it. ✔️She wants to stop it from moving. ✔️So every fiber in her wants to catch it. ✔️Therefore, she will fight until it’s hers. ✔️15-30 minutes of this can be more effective than a 90 minute walk. And you don’t even have to leave your home. 🤯 This ties into the “Drive” and “Engagement” Pillars of Dog Training. My Three Pillars of Dog Training are: 1. Engagement 2. Trust 3. Drive Some additional benefits of this game: → It builds engagement with your dog. → It builds prey drive. → You can then leverage this drive for obedience. → They’re motivated just at the sight of the tug. → They want to do anything for you to get it. → They become more compliant. → Obedience training becomes more fun. → You ☠️ two birds with one stone: 1. Super obedience session. 2. Tired dog This works for many breeds and sizes. Walks are useful and is great for exercise. But dogs are efficient walkers. Therefore it doesn’t burn as much energy as we like to think. Especially for high energy and active breeds. A lot of dogs also go on mental autopilot when walking.
