https://lnkd.in/dxq7f5FS China and the US are the largest methane emitters in the world, but they are also among those that have taken the boldest action. One has methane emission standards and a fee, helping build the Global Methane Pledge, and the other has a comprehensive Methane Action Plan. We hope they continue to signal to the world that methane mitigation is a central part of keeping 1.5C alive, reducing the temperature faster than decarbonization alone.

On the same day that a global group of experts described the UN climate talks as 'no longer fit for purpose', the Kick Big Polluters Out campaign revealed that over 1,700 fossil fuel lobbyists have been granted access to the COP29 summit in Baku. As a forum on climate action, the COP has lost all credibility. It has become a marketplace for oil and gas deals and companies peddling false (but profitable) 'solutions' that allow the fossil fuel industry to continue. https://lnkd.in/etVpvEwS #KickBigPollutersOut UNFCCC UN SOMO

Exciting developments in the fight against climate change. The Global Methane Forum 2024, a collaborative effort between the Global Methane Initiative, UN Economic Commission for Europe, Global Methane Hub, and Climate and Clean Air Coalition, brought together stakeholders from over 50 countries to accelerate methane emission reductions. Good to see innovative methane emissions mitigation activities showcased across various sectors. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing are key to driving impactful change. #EnergyTransition #Methane #Gas #ClimateChange

Once again, fossil fuel lobbyists are more represented at COP than the 10 most climate-vulnerable countries. This analysis from the Kick Big Polluters Out coalition comes as top climate policy experts have said to the UN that COP is not fit for purpose and that urgent action is needed to reform the process. We are quoted in the Guardian today: “Cop29 kicked off with the revelation that fossil fuel deals were on the agenda, laying bare the ways that industry’s constant presence has delayed and weakened progress for years. The fossil fuel industry is driven by their financial bottom line, which is fundamentally opposed to what is needed to stop the climate crisis, namely, the urgent and just phaseout of fossil fuels.” https://lnkd.in/eKqyAJ8Y #KickBigPollutersOut #COP29 #YouthActivism

https://lnkd.in/gpQsYn2B « The concentration of methane in the atmosphere is now more than two-and-a-half times as much as preindustrial levels, and more than half of the world’s methane emissions are man-made. Its presence in the atmosphere dissipates in roughly 12 years, a relatively short span of time, but numerous studies point to its heat-trapping effects as being as much as 80 or more times stronger than carbon dioxide’s. That means it can have more immediate consequences for the climate. In 2021, the United States was among the first signers and promoters of the Global Methane Pledge, which set a target of reducing global, man-made methane emissions by 30 percent from 2020 levels within a decade. The pledge has been signed by 158 countries. “2030 is rapidly approaching, though, and emissions are still being released in huge amounts,” said Mr. Halff. “This seems in large part because oil and gas production is surging both in the U.S. and elsewhere.” » By Max Bearak Sept. 19, 2024

#BREAKING🚨At least 1773 fossil fuel lobbyists registered for #COP29 climate talks this year. Oil, gas, and coal lobbyists outnumber representatives from the Top 10 most climate vulnerable countries combined. Dozens of representatives of the most polluting industry continue to flood UN climate talks, spinning false solutions to a problem they alone created. You may have seen some coverage about a bunch of UN grandees saying this morning that COPs are no longer fit for purpose. This is the WHY that coverage fails or refuses to mention: because the fossil fuel industry has co-opted and corrupted the only plan we have to secure a liveable future. They are in the halls of power, defining the possible by their bottom lines. The call is coming from inside the house. #Climate #FossilFuels #KickBigPollutersOut

🌍 Global Leaders Unite to Tackle Methane Emissions at Climate Week NYC 🌍 Last week, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and COP29 Presidency gathered global decision-makers in New York to discuss actionable strategies for reducing methane emissions from the energy sector, as reported by Petroleum Australia. With ministers, executives, and international organizations in attendance, the focus was clear: tackle methane, one of the most potent drivers of global warming. Key takeaways: - Methane reduction is now a critical focus for Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. - Proven and cost-effective solutions to reduce emissions are within reach. - Collaboration between financial institutions and governments is essential to turn pledges into meaningful action. COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev reaffirmed his commitment to methane reduction, announcing a summit co-hosted with the US and China to explore financial solutions. 💡 This global momentum is key—and businesses have a crucial role to play in reducing emissions and driving sustainability forward. At Dynamic Carbon Credits, we’re ready to help companies take concrete steps towards a greener future by providing solutions for both carbon and methane emissions. Together, we can transform pledges into real impact. 🌱 Contact us today to explore how we can support your sustainability goals! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gZgUbaVv #ClimateAction #MethaneReduction #COP29 #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #UNClimateWeek #CarbonCredits #BusinessSustainability

What a big surprise? Who could have expected it? The second in a row Fossil Fuel hosted COP just proves who rules. Which of course is no surprise, since they get $7trillion a year in subsidies (IMF: https://t.ly/Yg0BN) alone, which is over and above windfall profits. And then at COP we hold endless discussions on how to climate finance.... #EndFossilFuelSubsidiesNOW #EndFossilFuels Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative Loss and Damage Collaboration

"Analysis reveals many big producers increased output of fossil fuels and related emissions in seven years after Paris climate deal". Governments and corporations keep pushing the narrative that we need to phase-out coal, oil and gas while burning more than ever fossil fuels, and they call it "sustainable development". The thing is, we know who they are, and public access to information and databases such as Carbon Majors <https://lnkd.in/dyMwWHpt> are more relevant than ever for debates on responsibility, reparation, and just transition. https://lnkd.in/dNjdAde6

They can start right now by doing compulsory scrapping of cars that are 10 years or older, which half of cars on UK roads are. Not just to reduce pollution, but also accidents, since those old cars don't even have backup cameras, let alone CarPlay. This is common sense, something anyone can agree on, regardless of their politics. They should have planned to do this REGARDLESS of who won the election. Reducing pollution does not stop or start due to any political event - it has to be nonstop - all gas, no brakes. #climatechange #ev #electricvehicles
