As #AI driven cyber incidents rise, boards must recognize heightened risks from poorly tested updates. Proactively assessing cybersecurity strategies, including a balance of agent-driven and agentless tools, is vital, as well as robust testing processes will be essential to mitigate risks. Cybersecurity is a strategic discussion on business resilience. The systemic CrowdStrike downtime event on Friday 19 July highlights a critical and often overlooked aspect of the aviation industry: its profound reliance on sophisticated IT infrastructure. While the details of the incident are still unfolding, its immediate impact on global IT operations underscores the significant vulnerabilities that come with digital interconnectedness. In an industry where efficiency and precision are paramount, such disruptions can have cascading effects, grounding flights, stranding passengers, and creating a ripple of operational chaos across the globe. Layered Resilience As the New York Times reported, everything from airlines to banks to healthcare systems in many countries was hit by a flawed software update by CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are designed to protect users from hackers. CrowdStrike took the responsibility for the software bug, sent in a system update, that caused the outage. This incident is not a cyberattack. Obviously, the resiliency of the operating system was not sufficient to mitigate the vulnerability. Bugs happen all the time and are unavoidable but this time it has been an catastrophic failure because of the remediation procedures. CrowdStrike incident highlihts the importance of Layered Resilience. If I refer to NATO Layered Resilience Concept, both military and civilian assets have to be ready to respond to shocks, the unexpected events, such as climate change, severe weather, military assault or in this case a software bug! We cannot be everything ready, but we can anticipate possibilities, adapt our forces and services and practice. It is all about preparing! #resilience, #layeredresilience, #natolayeredresilienceconcept

As an engineering company, we are fully aware that data security is an extremely important subject. A minor oversight on our part can cost our clients a great deal, which is why we pay attention to both procedures and sensitising our team to all issues concerning the security of data transmission and handling. Unfortunately, there are many black hat groups operating in the world who would love to lay their hands on sensitive information. On October 2023 Boeing has been the victim of an attack by the LockBit ransomware gang, which has threatened to release "massive amounts" of secure data. However, the US aircraft manufacturer was adamant and refused to comply with the hackers' demands, following the principle "you don't negotiate with terrorists". As a result of the attack, the LockBit gang seized 43 GB of data, demanding $200 million for its return. As Boeing showed no signs of giving up, LockBit eventually released the information, which included the aircraft manufacturer's IT management software, monitoring logs and other audit tools. Moving to the present day, the US Department of Justice's disclosed indictment against LockBit creator Dimitri Yurievich Khoroshev mentions a "Virginia-based multinational aerospace and defence corporation" that has received another ransom demand, to the tune of $200 million, to which Boeing has again confirmed that they were the victim of an attack. Boeing's $200 million ransom demand is one of the most significant in recent ransomware attacks, with other victims, such as shipping giant Maersk losing $300 million in a 2020 attack. However, these are "small" amounts compared to what happened to Amey PLC, a UK engineering company that faced a $2 billion attack in 2021. These situations show that data security has never been more important. Even small oversights can have huge consequences and generate monstrous costs. It will be no exaggeration to say that the issue of information security is a battlefield no less fierce than kinetic conflicts. #news #aviation #boeing #hackers #cybersecurity #datasecurity
