It’s quite remarkable how well the PIK markets the concept of “tipping points” as “proven,” even though both the IPCC and other scientists are intensely debating this theory. In my view, the PIK acts as if tipping points are imminent. Yet, the IPCC states “low confidence,” which does not mean that tipping points do not exist. Overall, tipping points are a brilliant concept to provide political justification for pushing through certain measures, some of which do not even address climate change but instead focus on other agendas like increasing state intervention in private life or promoting de-growth.

We are thrilled to announce Timon McPhearson, Director at the Urban Systems Lab at The New School, has been selected to serve as a Chapter Lead for the first-ever U.S. National Nature Assessment. Timon will be working with Federal Coordinating Lead Author (FCLA) Emmett Duffy, Chief Scientist at Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network and MarineGEO Program at Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, on the chapter “Bright Spots in American Nature.” The National Nature Assessment will take a holistic approach to better understand the role of nature in the lives of people across the country, integrating science with traditional ways of knowing and the needs of communities. The assessment will take stock of what nature provides people through its inherent value, and its contribution to human well-being, the economy, cultural heritage, national security and more—and looks ahead to understand how these benefits might change under future conditions. The assessment is expected to be released in 2026. #nationalnatureassessment #NNA1 #NNA #americannature #climate #biodiversity #ecosystemservices #nature #resilience

This is a good idea to implement in India as well. Coastal data collected through citizen science initiatives plays a crucial role in understanding and preserving marine environments. These efforts harness the observations and insights of local communities, providing valuable information about coastal ecosystems that may otherwise go unrecorded. By engaging citizens in the process of data collection, these initiatives foster a sense of stewardship and raise awareness about environmental issues impacting coastal areas. Furthermore, the diverse perspectives and experiences of citizen scientists contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of ecological changes, such as the effects of climate change, pollution, and habitat degradation. This grassroots approach not only enhances scientific research but also empowers communities to advocate for sustainable practices and policies, ultimately leading to healthier and more resilient coastal ecosystems. My research focuses on using such data in shoreline change prediction and can be extended further to use such information available from different sources.
This is a wonderful info video produced by Cornwall Council explaining the #CoastSnap process. https://lnkd.in/dyEp5rkn There are now 38 CoastSnap stations scattered across South West England. I’ve been reflecting on my work with DREAM School and KindeziCare as spatial techniques that bridge the seen and unseen. To create this bridge, we built a language—one that relies on symbols and a relational system that gives those symbols meaning. In DREAM School, our symbols came from dreams, and the relational system was storytelling, guided by our ancestors. In KindeziCare, the symbols were communal care practices, and the relational system was a community business ecosystem. For the past five years, this work has been a study in spatial technologies, raising profound questions: 💎 Where is home? 💎 What lessons has our family learned about home? 💎 How can we create safety? These questions guide us as we consider: how do we wish to govern ourselves? When new technologies emerge, how do we embrace our sovereignty, ensuring we remain the shapers of technology rather than letting it shape us? Technology that does not serve its users becomes obsolete. As a Black Indigenous consultant working with multi-billion dollar technology companies to advance AI, LLM, and ML, I find it is my roots—my home—that serve me most amidst Big Tech. #AI #SpatialTechnology #AIGovernance #Security #Home

The 11th r3.0 International (online) Conference 'Tipping Points on Tipping Points - Building Necessary Collapse Resilience' on September 10/11 has four main themes, each with extraordinary speakers. Session 2 is called ‘Municipalities & Bioregions: Place-Based Collapse Resilience.’ 2024 marks a conscious shift for r3.0 into a primary focus on place-based engagement, specifically at the nested scales of municipalities and bioregions, as these represent the most promising contexts for navigating collapse with resilience. This session focuses on the systemic innovations that communities are seeding to ruggedize in the context of increasing complexity and potential crashes. Belen Paez will walk us through the development and implementation of the Sacred Amazon Headwaters Bioregional Plan 2030, which represents perhaps the most robust long-term bioregional strategy globally, which importantly asserts indigenous stewardship as a strategic imperative for achieving justice and regeneration. Get your ticket at https://lnkd.in/e8QSWjVX and be with us for all 4 conference topics, discussed on September 10/11 online.

📢 John Jensen Distinguished Lecture Series at AAG 2024 📢 Sponsored by Remote Sensing Specialty Group (RSSG) Title: Trade-off between water conservation and heat alleviation with environmental justice for urban sustainability Speaker: Dr. Soe Myint Date: 4/18/2024 Time: 1:20 PM – 2:40 PM Room: 314 (Lānaʻi), Third Floor, Hawai’i Convention Center Heat is the deadliest weather-related risk in the United States and kills more people than all other weather-related disasters combined. Understanding the linkage of heat, vegetation and social inequality is critical for urban sustainability. In this talk, Dr. Myint will discuss how to manage vegetation to reduce urban heat, and assess the effects of intra-urban social inequality on water use. Dr. Myint will also provide solutions to mitigate urban heat and outdoor water use by adding new green space in urban environments. Dr. Myint will identify the trend, challenges, and opportunities using remote sensing to solve pressing urban environmental issues.
