Most grateful for the superb service of my friend, Lieutenant General Dave Bellon, USMCR. He is a leader of uncommon wisdom, and wit, who has never led from the lapel, but by virtue of his character, mind, and example. His holistic thinking/doing—which is too rare these days—holds true to our battalion motto from 33 years ago: “Ready for all, yielding to none.”
There are examples from his tenure that other elements of national power (e.g., diplomacy) should consider.
From the article: “A: For most of the time in the Reserve we thought very traditionally, say a reservist was a master mechanic as a civilian then that Marine should be in the motor pool. But what we learned was many of our reservists had developed mastery in other fields, particularly emerging fields. So, we developed the concept of the Marine Innovation Unit, which uses reservists with emerging or difficult-to-find skills such as cyber, automation, machine learning to address Marine Corps problems working with the Marine Warfighting Lab.”
