Yesterday, Cognition Labs brought out the world's first AI Software Engineer, Devin. (https://preview.devin.ai/) Devin is supposed to work on prompts and make it easier for the engineers to stay focused towards innovation. Its web browser, code editor and shell are designed to work alongside human engineers. Devin has passed the software engineering interviews for leading AI companies and worked at Upwork for real jobs. It is a self-sustained SWE that can follow prompts or directions and make the best out of it, in case of making a website, app, debugging and testing etc. We are moving so ahead in tech right now that the bare minimum of learning and doing is not enough to survive. We need to push our limits and get on the front of technology. There is no doubt that these kinds of advancements will not help humans but they will also affect jobs for those who are not standing out in public. Hustle, build a network, upgrade your skills and learn in public. Cognition released the following video of their AI software engineer, Devin 🤯 The "developer tool" can 🤖 autonomously write code 🔎 find solutions on the internet when it encounters problems ⚒️ complete engineering jobs on freelance websites 🪛 tune its own AI models The tool has its own command line, code editor and workflow which you can observe while it is "working" ⏱️ Bloomberg conducted some tests and found Devin could code a basic Pong game and create a website from scratch in under 20 minutes. A new generative artificial intelligence startup called Cognition AI Inc. is looking to disrupt coding with the launch of a new tool that can autonomously create code for entire engineering jobs, including its own AI models. That tool’s name is Devin, and it takes the premise of GitHub Inc.’s and Microsoft Corp.’s Copilot developer tool much further, as it can carry out entire jobs on its own, rather than simply assist a human coder. When evaluated on the SWE-Bench benchmark, which asks an AI to resolve GitHub issues found in real-world open-source projects, Devin correctly resolves 13.86% of the issues unassisted, far exceeding the previous state-of-the-art model performance of 1.96% unassisted and 4.80% assisted. **What Devin Can Do?** 1. Learn Unfamiliar Technologies: Devin isn't limited by its initial programming. It can learn and adapt to new technologies. 2. "Learn how to code, it will guarantee you a job" While this adage felt like a guiding mantra of the 2010s, it does seem to have reached the end of its truth. Yesterday, the company Cognition released Devin, their own AI software engineer. The demos are really interesting and show a seemingly very powerful tool that is being rolled out. Have a look at the video below. Will that mean that programmers will be out of a job tomorrow? Not quite. Karpathy compared AI software development with AI driving and I tend to agree. AI will start taking over more and more of individual actions, then parts of the planning, then part of the structure, and so on, always redirecting the role of the user to more abstract and more supervision sort of roles. This will likely hold for the next few years to come, AI will supercharge those that already know how to use the tools. The presenters talk about the platform like it's a person doing the work - and it kind of does "work". Watching it make a little project plan and stepping through code, looking up documentation, adding debugging... very impressive. It can train other LLMs?
